Having just purchased our motorhome last October, we had to have it winterized last fall and today we took it in to have it dewinterized. Hoping to do this on our own, but as newbies, wanted to have it done right. With the winterization of our motorhome, the dewinterization was at no charge. We had them also check the air conditioning, batteries (which they didn't have distilled water so we told them we would do our selves), replace the antena crank handle and fill 1/4 of our water tank. They also took a look at the roof to make sure everything was ok.

I thought the charge was a bit high but was wondering what the average cost of an inspection would be? We have a 2006 Pace Arrow 37 ft. It was over $100, which may be normal, but we even were charged a portion of an hourly rate to fill the propane tank. Which was practially full. Is this a standard normal fee from what you may have experienced?

Appreciate any feedback.

Thank you.

If it took an hour, that is not an unusual rate at all.

Any place that claims to be an RV repair shop should have distilled water and no dealer should ever charge labor to fill a propane tank. I would take my business elswhere.

I suppose really it wasn't but there was no mention of any charges until we went to leave so we weren't prepared. Lesson learned!!

Thank you.

Miles, I totally agree with you on that. We were specifically told from the dealer not to use anything but distilled water and when he came up with a dirty cup full of tap water to fill the batteries, we were glad we asked if he was using distilled. He said he's been using tap water for 16 years without any problem. Didn't feel comfortable with that so we told him that we will fill them ourselves.

Tajp water quality varies considerably from town to town. Here in Portland OR tap water is fine to use in batteries. Other places this is not the case. Any time there is a charge for service the amount should be related upon seeking approval and not be a sprprise after the fact.

Hi,

I think I'd dispute the labor charge for filling up the propane tank, unless they had to drive it elsewhere to fill it.

"walking the roof" is something to do at the end of every camping season, too, so plan on having it done in the fall.

For service shops, time is money. If they do not charge you for the tech's time, they lose money because the tech could be working on another customer's billable job. Your (OP) mistake was not getting a price before the work was done. I personally would not expect free service for checking the AC or replacing the antenna crank handle; who furnished the handle? $100 per hour is an average shop rate for RV service shops. Anytime an RV or boat is involved, all bets are off on service rates and parts costs.

And another idea from the peanut gallery. Continue to read and learn on this site so that next time You can do all this and put $100 worth of gas in the tank. You can even walk the roof if you are comfortable up their. I agree on the distilled water. In high school I worked in service station, We always got our distilled water "from the tap". But in my batteries I use bottled distilled water. Buck a gallon no big deal.

The RV shops in my area charge from $85.00 per hour to $110.00 per hour. You can expect to pay in that range for work done. Where I purchase my propane, there is no additional cost over the purchase price of the propane. Sounds odd that they would charge additional labor.
