The first time I towed our 5th wheel I noticed it seemed like the truck was surging forward and back. Is this what they mean by chucking? What causes it and is there anything I can do to prevent it. Either by driving habits or installing something. Thanks

MorRyde pin box is the way I went. Got it last spring and has been great. Tweetys was the best $ at the time.

One common cause is not enough weight on the pin. I've found that moving a few pounds from the rear of the trailer to the front can make a big difference.

The fresh water tank is forward of the axles. I'll try towing with it full next. Thanks.

It would be eaiser to help if we knew what hitch you had.

Is the trailer level? The pin box can be adjusted to get the proper weight on the hitch. I have a very ordinary Reese hitch and yet have never had any noticeable chucking. But when I took delivery of my trailer 5 years ago the dealer did make some height adjustment to the trailer to match it up with my truck. I am sure they did not stop what they were doing and drag out the impact wrench and torque wrench and get a couple of guys to help hold up the bottom half of the pin box in order to get the bolts back in different holes for no reason.

We also have a standard Reese hitch. We have the MorRyde pin box adjusted to the truck and believe it or not, getting rid of the stock tires that came on it and going with Goodyear 614's also smoothed out the ride. I believe that's because with the old tires I had to run them at their max inflation and the Goodyears I can run a little below that.

I had a smaller fifth-wheel for 18 years and noticed "chucking" a number of times. While reading posts before purchasing our new FW, I was concerned because I had an old Reese sliding hitch that I took off my old truck and put on the new one this past fall. Well, we just got back from a trip to Zion, about 1,200 round trip and I am happy to report that we had no "chucking" on the whole trip. We don't have any special pin box or anything like that, but the trailer must be set up just about right so far. It may very well be that adjusting your front weight will help with your problem.

As noted, sometimes it is just a matter of loading. Playing with that may solve your problem.
But a new pin box can help also. I had very little chucking on mine, and that was mostly just on certain concrete highways. I replaced the stock pin box with a 5th Airborne air cushioned pin box and it eliminated virtually all the chucking that I did have. Plus eliminates some of the shock from the trailer and makes the truck ride better.
