It's a nice little park, but the owners are a bit much. A lot of rules, which they will elcture you about when you check in. Also, they will walk around with the rules in their hand. And if that is not enough, check out the rules posted on the bulleting board in the middle of the park. That is, if you lost your copy of the rules they give you at check in. Also, if you have dogs, follow the signs and do not let them use the bathroom on the grass, unless they are in the fenced in dog park. They must go on the gravel otherwise. And if you have kids, there is nothing for them to do there. Well except the creek. And then make sure they don't move any rocks.
We won't return back....well maybe when we get hold and crotchety and don't have kids with us...lol
We walked Mountain Stream. We didn't care for it for several reasons. One, It's not up the Mountain but at the bottom. ( hot down there). 2. Had very tiny sites. 3 kind of pricey for where it is. 3 fire rings were only a few feet from the next camper over, and then there is that grass thing.
Speaking of the grass thing. One of the explanations for the dogs not going on the grass was that it puts bacteria on the ground. When I was checking in, the lady told me about problems with raccoons...a neighbor mentioned seeing turkeys...Do the raccoons and turkeys know not the use the bathroom on the grass too? WTF?

We are currently at Camp Hatteras in the OBX. Beautiful weather, nice campground, no kids, no fish (dammit)...life doesn't get much better. If I lived in the Piedmont area, I know where I would be going frequently.
You can pick your site. They have pictures of each site on their website. Just click on the site # and scroll to the bottom and the site pic shows up in the lower leftside. Click on it to get a bigger pic.
We like site 19. Plan your trip - and things will work out just fine.
We are going to try out Hagan Stone Park near Greensboro Memorial Day weekend.
Jordan Lake is nice and has Poplar Point Campground and Crosswinds Campground. The playground at poplar point is just a couple of swings but both campgrounds have a beach access and waterfront sites.
Zooland in Asheboro is really nice and you can stay there while you visit the zoo.
These are farther east than what you are asking for but they give you some more options in a somewhat reasonable drive. I have also heard Kerr Lake has some nice camping.
Also here is a thread from when I asked about camping in the Charlotte area

Us too. So we like Buck Creek just down the road a bit. Very nice owners that live on site. And the sites back up to (what else) Buck Creek and they have 2 swimming holes that you can use if you can get used to the mountain water temp.
A few others that are within a 2-3 hour drive of Charlotte area:
Tanglewood Park in Clemmons
Lake Wateree State Park, south of Lancaster SC (Winnsboro maybe?)
Andrew Jackson SP Lancaster SC just south of Charlotte.
Oak Hollow near High Point NC
And quiet a few RV parks in the Asheville, Hendersonville, Maggie Valley areas.

Lucy kind of brings up a good point and hints around to some others...No offense to anyone here that is retired, a senior (not in high school or college), and doesn't have kids.. but this is more about what Mountain Stream caters to. If you fit the bill, then you might really like it. It was well taken care of and nicely done, but that is where it ended for us. You can read our review on the RVParkreviews.com website. Ours will be listed for October 2011.

We went to Hagan Stone with the cub scouts a couple of years ago. My wife and daugther stayed in the camper while my son and I were in a tent with the rest of the pack. Section C which is where most of the rv sites is in one large field all first come first serve. Some of the sites share water between them. Here are some photos
Depending on what "side" of Charlotte you are located, you may be only one and a half hours from Stone Mtn State Park. It is located near Elkin NC and has a great campground. It is reserved on the State Park reservation site. It is a beautiful area with a large waterfall and a huge granite mountain with a historical cabin and lots of other interesting things. Check it out online. It is certainly a good consideration for one of those 3 day trips you mentioned. If interested, send me a pm and I can get you some additional info as we live only a few miles from the park.
We have used both Mountain Stream and Buck Creek. I agree Mountain Stream some sites are small and maybe not great for young kids that want a pool and playground but we love how clean it is and the we love the creek. When passing thru to Smokey Mountains we use Buck Creek for the easy in and easy out pull thru at the RC air field since we arrive late at night. Then first thing in the morning while it is still cool out we hit the big hill on I40 going west.

I couldn't agree with you anymore....Stone Mountain State Park is our favorite NC so far...and it's within an hour of us, so it makes it even better.
