We have RVed a long time and whether or not we meet other campers and become friends or not really varies. Sometimes at the end of a long trip we really haven't met anyone beyond very superficial. Other trips we may meet someone and maintain a relationship for years, even if just e-mails. I never hesitate to speak to a neighbor and will usually ask them something about their RV, where they are from, etc. But then I try not to push things and try to read whether or not they want to socialize. If we get "positive vibes" we may invite them over for desert or to share a campfire. I think the type of campground makes a difference. Real private sites surrounded by vegetation are not conducive to meeting neighbors.

What we do is leave our generator running all night, leave the doors of our truck open and blast rap music from our 5000w base boomer system, let our dog run wild and our kids smash their hard ball against the neighbors rig. We also like to burn our trash including plastic bottles in the fire ring and leave our scare lights on all night. We yell and swear a lot also. Hanging our underwear on a clothes line stretched across the front of our site also is an ice breaker along with idling our diesel for at least 30 minutes before pulling out to run and get more firecrackers.

There are lots of ways to break the ice with your neighbors....

Why do you need an "ice breaker"? Just walk over and say "HI!".

dh and i are not exactly the outgoing type, but we don't mind too much if someone wants to stop by for a chat...that being said, we are pretty good at making up something "really important" that we have forgotten to do to get away if we feel it necessary

i smoke and drink and curse...many find at least one of those things offensive (many all three), so i pretty much keep myself to myself - it's safer that way

Like most folks I just start a casual conversation and check the response. I always tell the new neighbors if they need anything from batteries to aluminum foil, to just ask as we probably have it. We usually share our firewood with those who are low or out as I always bring a bunch. Have loaned out the Honda 2000 a couple of times which works well for the both of us. Once you know your neighbors it is unlikely that you will have any sort of issues with them.

Just say "Hi Ho Neighbor". If you want to attract a crowd and have them come over, just open up your hood or look like you are working on something. Works everytime for me

I always try to get out and meet my neighbors and others... my wife says "He's out roaming in the campground".

Without thinking too much about it, I usually find something that we might have in common: similar motorhome, home state, equipment, etc., or something new that I haven't seen before and I ask about it. If someone is working on a project, I offer to help, offer tools, or comment about their progress. Same thing about their cooking. Cooking bacon outside in the morning is an easy way to make friends. Ask your neighbors about restaurants, grocery stores, or places to visit in the area.

We like to sit outside as much as possible, reading with a cup of coffee or drink, and look up and say hello to people passing by. Make yourself accessible.

We've also met people here on RV.Net that we have camped or traveled with.

We're been RVing for over 30 years and anything from a "HI" to want a cold one has always worked. When we set up we always put a couple of extra chairs out. My parents back in the 60's use to have Manhattan/Martini hour at 5 PM every afternoon except for Sunday and everyone was invited.

Just take a walk around the campgrounds, and say hi as you pass by, and you'll meet a lot of nice people
Just come on down to Hillsdale State Park, and say hi.
