when trying to relax and hanging around outside

I would get that idea out of your head right away Our time to relax is when he is sleeping. When we camp, my wife and I have an understanding. When I am unhooking/setting up, she takes our little guy for a walk or to the playground. When I am cooking, she entertains him close by so we all can still talk and have fun, but I dont have to keep as close of an eye on him. When it is time for dishes, I take him for a walk or sit down on the big canvas tarps and play with him. We have both talked about this and agreed to the responsibilities ahead of time. It works great for us. As I read back through this it sounds very rigid, but this is just what we start with. Our main goal is to have fun while little james has fun.

I'm sure this goes without saying- but naturally I'm going to say it anyway!

Camping near any water body requires even greater vigilance than normal.

Water attracts children like a magnet- I can just about guarantee that if little kids get loose near a lake, river, etc., they'll head straight for that fascinating place.

We always pack lifejackets, too. If water play is on the agenda, the little ones wear them, no exceptions.

X2
when our kiddo was super little and we camped, one was always on super guard, while the other did their thing. it is the best way that worked for our family. we never wanted a pen, (just us) because as the kiddo explored we were watching and on top of things.

goodness no. I sure don't think that and I 'think' I guess others don't think that at all.

when it comes to little ones and camping everyone has to throw out their experiences and cautions
kinda second nature to say be careful of fire, be careful of water, watch this, watch that.

Every parent loves their children to death. But, if your kid cries and get loud, look at it in the prospective of your neighbor. Some people don't like the noise.

So you are saying not to bring your child if they cry or get loud? Have you ever been around a child? I have never met one that didn't cry or get loud at some point. I have always seen camping as a family event, my loud and crying child is certainly part of the family

A good analogy would be a movie theatre. If your shild is making a lot of noise (i.e. crying), you are disturbing the experience of those around you. Take your child inside (if you have a camper) or take him/her for a walk. A little crying/yelling may be expected/acceptable. But if your child is screaming non-stop, all-day, then you are not being considerate of others. It's similar to one's dog barking day and night.

I agree with you, we wont take my son to the movie theater. He simply does not have the attention span. If my child was constantly screaming while camping, we would go home because something is wrong. To expect a child to remain silent while camping is a bit silly.

Hi

Two Ideas, bells on the shoes. Tag team parenting one watches the baby and the other cooks ,etc. Also I had this plastic , grey in color play yard , found at Babies R Us or at used baby stuff stores, Target has it too. You could buy one set or two they fit together and put a blanket down then the penning, works for small kids and dog a puppies.
