I agree with korbe. Sort through the responses and use the advice that make sense to you. The world is full of gray; there are few black & white answers, anyway.

You dangerous animal, how dare you use a 1/2 ton for getting groceries! You have no idea how that gallon of milk and sliced deli meat can add up, your probably overloaded before you even get in the truck. Please be kind enough to send me an e-mail when you drive your death machine to the grocery store, so I can stay home and watch the evening news about you.

My advice is run (don't drive) to the nearest real truck store and find a nice class 8 rig that suits you.

Happy trails!!

I'm in tears laughing, all the while driving my 86 Ford Ranger towing my 44' toy hauler over Red Mtn pass in Colorado while reading this post then typing a response to this post on my iPad too.

I've broken all the rules too D with great success! I too see the humor in the forums. First time diesel owners are a real hoot. Talk about fish tales!

Yeah, what I hear is "My new diesel cost 60 grand, you better believe it's the greatest thing I ever towed with"

The BEST thing that I have learned on RV.net is about proportional brake controllers.

There are two kinds from what I have found.

-Self leveling, multi axis, fancy smancy stuff
-Old school Pendulum based, manual leveling

I am someone who generally buys everything used, I simply can't justify new prices for tools.

My F-150 had a pendulum based Tekonsha Primus that I bought used on eBay for about $35.00.

Some on this forum called it "junk"

My experience... I took the time to set it up properly, No it doesn't have "Boost" on it. But I could set the pendulum a little more aggressively if I wanted. Braking was smooth and uniform. If I slammed on my brakes, the Primus responded accordingly. If I needed just a little breaking, the Primus delivered.

New to me gas Dually came with a time based brake controller... My opinion on these time based controllers is negative due to EXPERIENCE. So I determined to replace it. I won a Tekonsha Voyager on Ebay for $13.00 that is going into the Dually. I will set it up properly and it will brake smoothly. (I love it when people discount stuff as junk that is NOT because I can buy it cheap)

I'll probably make my money back or more on the time based controller that came with the truck. lol.

Thanks!

If I chip my diesel will I blow up my trans?
If I chip my diesel will my engine blow up?
If I chip my diesel will my MPGs get worse?
If I chip my diesel will my gasser be a better tow vehicle than my diesel?

I'll wait for the "EXPERTS".......

There are other items I learned such as diesels have no engine braking, but to keep this post shorter we won't go there this time.
