My battery box seems to be designed for an 8D industrial 12V battery. It's too short for 6 Volts, although I'm close to deciding it's worth the effort to modify it, which I can do with a cutting torch and some effort. I haven't been happy with multiple 12 volts in parallel. I've used 6 volt deep cycle successfully before. Is anyone using 8D 12V batteries. Where are they buying them - what brand? The Trojan AGM 8D is nearly $550 - more than I can afford, and I'm not set up for AGM.

They don't seem to offer a non-AGM 8D size.

Any comments would be appreciated before I grab the cutting torch and start cutting/welding to fit deeper GC2 batts.

I always thought only the truckers used those big batteries...
This is a Interstate 8D MHD battery - a monsteur.

I have never seen one on a RV trailer but some of those really big RV trailers or motohomes may have them???

Seen them at our local Samsclub and they are reasonably (nowhere near $500) priced.

Interstate has 8D wet cell. I think they call it Big Joe.
Although I think most 8D are starting batteries for class 8 trucks.
I would do the mod for 6v GC2 possibly L16.

I regularly use Deka 8D AGMs in off grid solar systems for homes and cabins. They work well. They are heavy but should serve very well in an RV. I don't think they are available in a non AGM deep cycle configuration.

Back in the early nineties .110" plates were yanked out of the 8-D batteries to make way for up to 19 plates per cell. CCA figures soared to 1,400 - 1,600 CCA and with really porous sponge lead pasting may even be higher than that today. Their cyclability endurance is exactly the same as that of an automobile engine starting battery.

If you wish spend a telephone call to the battery manufacturer advertising their deep-cycle 8-D. Ask them if the thickness of the positive plate is the same as for their golf car GC2 battery. Don't settle for sales hype lip flapping fertilizer. Either the plates are the same or they aren't. If they do not answer your question I would respond with, "Thank you, but you just lost a battery sale". Their customer calls are now always recorded.

Thanks for the comments. I got good bang for the buck with 6 volts before. I think I'll be glad I went to the effort to modify the battery storage compartment. It's annoying because I only need about 1/4".

I'd mod the box for some 6V GC's instead although I think you'll lose some capacity if you're going with two 6V GC's.

6v will be better bang for buck but the 8D Deep Cycle will support heavy inverter use better. A starting battery is a poor idea in 8D

That is the same problem I ran into with my Coach. The battery box is under my step. For now I relocated the batteries to a new location so I could use the GC2's. I might cut the old box so I can make a little more room to add another set of GC2 at a later date..
