I have Direct TV, and have been using the 18" round dish, but have now installed a HD TV and an HD Satellite reciever. What is the best Sat dish for this? I use a large tripod outside, with hanging water bottle. I hate to get too big of a dish out there in the wind.

Aiming is everything. A fellow camper had a tailgater which is quite small and it worked well. I believe it worked well because it has electronics built in that aims it very well. So I surmise the answer lies in how good you are at aiming it.

You need a slimline 3 or a slimline 5 which are pretty a pretty large dish. If you like to tinker you can use a phase 3 dish with a slimline 3 lnb.

No it's not about aiming, I have a satellite finder, and aiming is no problem. It is about what is the best dish for HD service. You know,on a tripod outdoors, in the wind and all. My little round dish will not get HD.

OK, so slimline 3 or 5... I am only running one TV in the RV. I would like one cable coming from the dish.

Just remember on the Slimline 3 you will need a power inserter in the line. Then everything runs on one cable. Good Luck!

Get the 5. We use it with the SWIM system for 3 HD TV's in our RV running from one dish, with 1 LNB, and 1 cable.

You only need a power inserter if you go with a SWM (single wire multiswitch) LNB. If you only plan to use one tv and no DVR best go with the legacy (non-SWM) setup. Much less involved.

I would go with a Slimline 3. The 5 is more difficult to properly aim and the extra two satellites only get you the SD locals if you happen to be in a small market area. If you are going HD who cares where the SD locals are anyway? All HD is on the KA (99 and 103) satellites so all you need is the Slimline 3 no matter where you live.
