JD they are ripping you off, there is NO NEED for a DNS account at all, if your dish is Perm. attached to your RV. here is how I do it,(by the way I talked to the FCC and they backed me up with Direct TV)
1)My dish is a Doom on my roof
2) I have 2 boxes at home
3) when I leave in the RV I put BOTH box's from the house in the RV
Now my RV is my Home and under the law, Direct MUST give me every channel I pay for at home. 1 account-no DNS...No extra fee...
when I travel from City to city,I call up and give them the new Service address (Period) if they question you, just tell them that the dish is Perm attached and there is no service at the last address...I now get ABC/NBC all the locals and all the others I pay for. for no extra charge....yes, they tried to charge me $15.00 extra per month and even $5.00 per month, but once I told them I've talked to the FCC they dropped it all and told me that I was one of the few people who did the research and gave me everything I asked for. for me it's only fair and right to get what I pay for.
I hope this helps.... some people want the East/west coast with the fee, I did not.

We have DirecTV in our house. When snowbirding, say, in Arizona, we take one of our (2) boxes....and I set up our dish/tripod/strength/compass...aiming sometimes takes 2 minits...sometimes 5...
Of ocurse I don't get the "local" networks. But I DO get all the DirecTV stations (CNN, Discovery, FoxNews, etc., etc., etc.)
Running everything thru a switchbox, I get the local networks (NBC,ABC,CBS, etc) by simply putting up the antenna, turning it on, pusing the "ANT" button n the switchbox, aiming that in all in all takes about a minite and...there they are! To get back to DirecTV, simply push the "SAT" button on the switchbox.
No extra fee...simply pay the bill as it comes in. Tell'em nothing, they don't really care, pay the bill.

How about using a directv off-air tuner in conjunction with their dvr. Everytime we are in a spot for more than a few days I program through the directv dvr, the local stations. Works great as long as there are local stations to get!!

A dome satellite dish will not pick up local channels unless your locals are in New York City or Los Angeles. A dome dish won't pick up HD signals at all. If you want your locals and don't live in either place, you would either have to put a 2 inch diameter pole on your bumper or replace your dome with a WInegard motorized dish, $1600 +.

As much as we would like to get locals, DirecTV no longer supports Slimline dishes on tripods, and their technicians will not install such a dish unless it is on a permanent pole attached to the ground, not your RV. The Slimline dish would be required to get spot beamed local channels other than NYC or LA. Sure, you can do it on your own, but be prepared to be on a sharp learning curve, learning more about satellite television than you probably want to know.

If you don't want DNS, you don't get charged $15 a month. But you won't get local network signals unless you use your OTA antenna, which doesn't always work. At the campground we are at, we cannot get any local signals save for the religious channels. Mountainous terrain keeps signals from 15 miles away from being received.

That would work as long as you can receive off-air signals. You would actually get more channels over the air than though the dish, you will get all of the sub-channels, which include alternate programming, weather information, and 24 hour news.

You can now go on your computor and change your own local channels without calling Direct. We do this in Fl and also when we get back home. Locals are free no matter where we are.

I started off with this topic to help or to shed light for others who are in my option getting ripped off by Direct TV when they say it is against FCC rules, as I mentioned I talked with the FCC and after that I told Direct what I found out and now they do as I want, which is to get the local channels for no extra cost.
I'm not telling anyone to do something they do not want to do, I'm simply pointing out the real law's as the FCC tell them, not as Direct tells them.
So I will close this topic off and I wish you all well and safe travels.

Please explain how you do this. A web link would be very helpful.

I really don't understand the mystery of getting your channels while traveling. My service is based in my home. I have an extra receiver I put in the RV. If I am some place that I'm not getting channels, I call DTV, they reset it and presto. I get all my channels back. $4.95/month. That said we live in an area with no local channels. So I've never had to recover them.
