First hand experience. My oldest son passed away on January 2 of this year. One of the things I have a vivid memory of is all the traffic, strangers, who did not know us or our son stopping as we carried him to his last resting place. Thank you all for this sign of respect.

I would have stopped or slowed on the shoulder, but thats just me. I am a little surprised that there was a big enough gap for the OP to move over, I almost wonder if someone familiar with the lane reduction didn't leave him room to come over. If I'm the one in the casket I certainly wouldn't mind. With over 300 million people in this great country now, we can't expect everyone to think like us.

I think a lot of you are missing the point of the original post. The poster was presented with a significant safety issue. That is what is key! Two interstates merged, the OP was stuck in the left lane which was ending. He moved through the funeral procession, and then got into another lane respectfully leaving the procession to go on it's way.

I assume (could be wrong) that he used his turn signals, and changed lanes with friendly spacings and promptly got out of thier way, and remained respectful.

Unless he somehow rudely did this and then gunned his motor to make his loud exahust sing or turbo whine and drove off, he probably did the right thing, and the folks in the procession will have to live with the fact that they had to breifly share their lane with him to protect the lives of others.

In CA you could have been cited for CVC 2817. However, I doubt they would have written a cite.

If your lane was about to run out you should have stopped there until the funeral passed by. IMHO.

There was once a sick individual who equipped his car with a rear-facing camera and then stopped on an interstate.

He promptly got his wish and filmed a rear end collision (and guess what - not with him, but a few cars back).

Fortunately, the police figured out what happened and arrested him.

Edit...and more fortunately, there were no fatalities or serious injuries.

When did funeral processions become allowed on an Interstate. I have seen signs prohibiting them from the freeways. If you want to take a turnoff and they are there what do you do? Stop in the middle of the freeway until someone hits you in the rear? Since I was a school bus driver for 50+ years I always said to use a school bus for my procession. We have now just decided on cremation and then a memorial service. My wife's parents are buried 300 miles away and we have to go to put flowers on every Memorial Day. My folks are 200 miles in the other direction and they aren't allowed flowers in their cemetery unless you pay the prices of the cemetery. I said my kids won't have to worry about that.

While I will observe protocal for funeral processions, I also feel they should be outlawed. They are a traffic hazard for starters. They interfere with people trying to get to and from work or are already on the job. Have the service and then allow plenty of time for mourners to get to the graveside service without the need for a procession.

That said, it's been decades since I've even seen a funeral procession.

If traffic is barreling along behind you and the only safe option is to enter the procession, then entering the procession is what I would do. If it was possible to stop and wait for them I would, but many of our interstate exits here don't have that kind of space for a MH to come to a complete stop without the end sticking into oncomine lanes where people are going 70 miles an hour.

Chalk be up to the 'stop' group also provided it is safe to do so.

Uhhhh Us dumb Southerners have been showing our respect for those that have passed for years by pulling over and stopping and even getting out and standing, espcially for military processions. We don't seem to have any major problems in doing so and ain't been run over yet. It is not often a funeral procession travels on an Interstate but sometimes they do have a long way to go. Even most of us dumb Texans don't stop on an Interstate but we do show respect by not breaking into the procession line. I have been with the Patriot Guard since it started and have attended way too many funerals. When we have a procession for a hero there will be people that will come out of their ranches and homes and stand along the hwy just to salute the hero as he goes by. I have seen where these people will wait out in the Texas sun for hours because we don't know the exact time we will be passing by there area. Also something I never saw up "north". But yes, you can tell who the immigrants from the north are, they are the ones trying to get around people who stop for a funeral. Oh yeah when the light turns green the funeral procession still has the right-a-way to get thru the light. Yeah I am kinda passionate about this, we have lost respect along the way.
