I would like to tow our little car, on a trailer.
Trailer weight needs to be about 1200 lbs as the car weight about 3800 lbs or a little more.
The tow hitch on the Mh is rated at 5000 lbs, which seems a little low.
Another concern is keeping the car clean and prevening damage from rocks etc.
An enclosed trailer would be great but are they not pricey?
What does everyone else use?

we tow flat. why does the trailer weight *need* to be 1200-lbs or did you mean 'can't be more than 1200-lbs. if you have a Class III hitch then yes, your hitch is rated to tow 5000-lbs.

Not knowing what kind of car - if it can be towed four down, trailers are an option along with a car dolly. Dolly userly tow front end up so if its a front wheel drive you should be good to go. Check with your dealer on your towing options then make an informed decision. You will also need to have brakes on your what ever you tow. JM2Cents Bill

We lready flt tow another vehicle. The Merc can't be flat towed or towed on a dollie.
I look at what trailers are on the Internet, from time to time, available.
I've seen a couple of nice aluminum trailers with shields, on the front but have no idea who makes those and haven't seen them for sale anywhere for now.

I did a google search for "aluminum car hauler" and got several manufacturer's sites. Many of them had a tool-free number for information. You could try calling some of them, and asking if they have a dealer near you.
There's a good chance there is one.
Check your local craig'slist for aluminum car trailers. There might be a used one at a good price.
Good luck.

An enclosed trailer would be great but empty weight will be way over 1200 pounds. My little 6x12 weighs 1200 empty and it would barely handle the weight of a Smart car. An enclosed car hauler will weigh roughly 3000 empty. My 16' steel car hauler weighs about 1600 empty so that would be a little heavy. Like others have suggested aluminum will suit your weight needs but will be pricey. My car hauler was about a buck a pound, expect to pay over twice that for aluminum.

We had the same issues. Found a beautiful aluminum trailer for just under $5,000 brand new--weighs 1200lbs--solved our problem.

We wanted to tow four down as well. We have towed a bunch of different vehicles in a few different ways and for us the trailer approach has been the best. The ability to back up and no road wear on the vehicle make towing on a trailer a hit for us.

Here is a folding trailer from the same company that made our trailer. These guys are awesome and represent their product very well.

Well, its slightly heavier than what you wanted, but what about a Carry-on car trailer like THIS one over at Golden Gait trailers in Charlotte, NC? Can handle over 5,000 lbs of car, and weighs only 1,350 lbs. Price is very reasonable, too. Could probably get into this trailer for less than what it'd cost to set up a vehicle for 4 down towing. I don't think you're going to find one any lighter, that could handle as much weight as you have in mind.

I've seriously considered going this route, that Carry-on trailer is very tempting. However, for us, having to deal with a 15' dual axle trailer like this at our campsite (thats way too big to maneuver by hand) is just more trouble than its worth. Would make setting up camp and breaking camp such a 'circus act', would not be worth it.

Saw the video posted previously for the Kendon folding trailer. LOVE the idea, have always thought a collapsible trailer like that would be the perfect solution. It'd solve the campsite storage issue completely! Problem is, it only works for very tiny, lightweight cars, 3000 lbs or less. That rules us out.

If Kendon ever makes a collapsible trailer like that which can handle a 4400 lb minivan, I'd be all over it! (Hint, hint...)
