if you must use PayPal, I would set up a separate small account with limited funds in it for that use only. then when they lock up your funds in a dispute, it will not really affect you.

Well that makes no sense since they only lock funds in dispute or delay access due to poor buyer ratings. I don't like Paypal's attitude now that they are part of EBay, but their system is streamlined, convenient, and pretty safe to use if you take the time to look at your account and not just believe the email you received.

so if you aren't careful you can get in trouble? I have heard that they can tie up much/most/all of an account once you have given them access.

Craigslist is a cyber yard sale. You NEVER ship anything unless they drop by your house and pay with CASH.

Not me! When I've sold items in the past, I always have them meet me at or in my bank, and or, in the case of selling vehicles, somewhere close to my home but not at my home. I don't need potentially nefarious creeps surveying my place for a possible uninvited return visit.

Its hard to believe that people still fall for these scams. There are so many flags on this one. I do a lot of selling (and buying) via Craigslist and eBay, and have different methods of conducting transactions. eBay is PayPal or cash ONLY, and Craigslist is cash ONLY and in person. If they don't want to do that, too bad. Sold a motorcycle via eBay once, a guy in Iowa wanted it, we talked several times over the phone and I made it very clear it was cash only ($14K), he wanted to use a cashiers check. Nope, they can be forged (and very well too). It was understood that he would be coming for it and that I took cash only. It was a 10 hour drive for him, he showed up at my house on a Saturday afternoon with his trailer ....and no cash. Had a cashiers check from some podunk Iowa bank. Its Saturday afternoon, can't verify anything until Monday AM at the earliest even if I was inclined to take a cashiers check, which I wasn't. He went back without the Harley.

No, if you aren't careful you end up out $1900 like the OP for trusting an email and not checking their Paypal account to confirm the deposit.

What you "heard" is not, in my experience true at all. They tie up only the disputed amount. They can put you on a "delayed money usage" if you receive bad eBay feedback. I had a guy buy an iPhone from me on eBay in excellent condition. He then contacted me and threatened to post bad feedback unless I refunded him $100. After we negotiated it to $20 I told him to take a hike but he posted bad feedback and Paypal put me on the slow access schedule (I had to wait for 2 weeks to use my funds). They took it off after my next positive feedback so now I get my money instantly. I think they overreacted for one bad feedback but it's their system and their rules.

and this is not "tying up your account" because? and what if no body came in with positive feedback?

The money is automatically released in 2 weeks and after 6 weeks of no bad feedback I would have gone back to "no delay" anyway. As I said, annoying but you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. Don't use them if you don't want to but it is a huge convenience for selling on eBay and buying at many other places on the web. Safer than handing over your credit card I'm sure (although I use the single use shop safe card which is just as safe).

Wow....... Maybe one should be required to pass a test before getting Internet access. These stories have been so well publicized for so long that it is amazing anyone would still fall for one. Scary and sad...........

We are not giving up yet. Thru searching I found this site referenced on Gmail fraud page. We have completed the form with lots of specific information and will see what happens. Tomorrow (Wed) we talk to the Craig County Sheriff Dept.

To the OP:

For God's sake give up now.

My earnest advice is, look for CC classes on internet Red Flags. There were so many obvious red flags here that you ought to be concerned that someone will backtrace your identity from this forum and come at you with another scam. You are telling the world you're open for business!!
