I told DW to get calgon water softener to try the geo method for the black tank and she came home with a 40 pound bag of rock salt. Heck, should work the same while adding a bit of scouring ability while it dissolves in the water, right? The thought was to add two cups of salt, 40 pounds of ice and 5 gallons of water to try and get the tank cleaned up (primarily so the sensors will work). Anything wrong with this train of thought? We'll be driving about 1000 miles.

Thanks in advance,
Rob

NO.

All that will do is turn your discharge into brine. It will do nothing for the geo method, and it won't help clean/flush the crud out of your black tank.

Rock salt is what you would use to regenerate a water softener, but it does absolutely nothing helpful in this use. Calgon Water softener, or 20 Mule Team Borax contain NO rock salt. Either of those would work wonders. Rock salt is a total waste.

What works every time is forgetting about cleaning it up and looking down the toilet to see when to dump.

I'd be worried about what the salt water would do to the tank level sensors also. Bad idea IMO.

One cup of Calgon liquid, and a cup of Dawn Dish detergent,
then add 5-6 gal. water and let it slosh on the way to and from camp. Works for me.

After the second treatment, my sensors were clean and I once again have accurate readings.
The ole look down the hole still works, but there are things I had rather do...
