What is the practical differences between the two? I know 4G is supposed to be faster, but is it available anywhere 3G is?
Just don't want to pay extra dollars if it is not worth it.

thnks for your time,

For Verizon it's just about everywhere. That has been my experience, I have two 4G devices. So far as speed is concerned there is no comparison. 4G is as fast or faster that any standard home cable/DSL system. This has also been my experience.

Bottom Line: I would NOT consider buying anything less that 4G capable hardware at this point in time. 4G hardware also works with 3G signals. And, go Verizon....

Since your title says ATT, check out this coverage map.

On edit, that link takes you to their 4G home page. Click on the coverage map when you get there.

My wife's 4g phone is considerably faster than my 3g Blackberry Torch. She also gets reception in places I don't. I'm waiting for the price to come down on a 4g phone so I can have one, too.

We only get AT&T's E here. I'd love to see a single G.

I also would like to see some Gs. Quartzite is 2G and also is most of the area I'm in in New Mexico. It would seem AT&T doesn't really care that much about out lying areas.

4G is the direction that all the carriers are evolving to. Even with Verizon it is currently only available in a few hundred metropolitan areas but it is expanding rapidly; once you are in "the country" you are back to 3G (or less). IMHO it is foolish to buy any equipment these days that is not 4G capable since in a few years it will be everywhere. The speed difference on Verizon is typically a factor of 4-5x over 3G. Once you get used to 4G it is hard to go back.

We are 4,000 miles into a 8,000 mile trip from Rainier, OR...down hwy 101 and hwy 1...into Yosemite NP...Carlsbad Caverns NP...Ft. Worth... middle of Mississippi...and now near Little Rock.

The only places I had 4G was in the larger metro areas. It's very fast.
But it's not going to be "nationwide" for a while yet. Still, only invest in equipment that is both 4G and 3G compatible. You don't want to be ONLY able to get 3G in areas that do have 4G

We are on the Verizon network but we have a month to month with Millenicom. EXCELLENT service. Cheaper than going with Verizon.

I use a Samsung mifi with a Wilson Cradle to boost the signal. I use a netbook for internet. We got phone calls in DEATH VALLEY. (no internet though). (I can use the Wilson Cradle to boost my Sprint phone signal.) I sent and received emails in YOSEMITE (not good enough signal to upload pics though(
