We are hoping to get reservations inside the park the 3rd week of Sept. If we do, do we still need a car to get around other than the shuttle service? Are there places to see that is accessible by car that the main does not go? We won't be doing a lot of hiking.
Thanks for the feedback.
As you can see by the bus schedule a lot of activity stops in Early September. Snow normally starts sometime in September and yet the Park is beautiful all year. If it is operating when you are there, the YART bus is a cool ride. You get to see tha area down to Mammoth Lakes without driving the rig up Hwy 120. I'd take a towed if you can and use the shuttles if available.

bicycles are a good way to get around too.
be sure to make reservations, since Sept. is still a great time to camp there.
campsites will go almost as fast as summertime.

Huh? Its normally peak heat in Sept.
I have seen early snow storms in October but it doesnt happen every year.

Yeah, Sept will be hot, like Aug. I would bring a car if you have time and really want to see the park. The shuttle is only the valley and IMHO, that is a very small portion of the park to visit.
You will want to visit Glacier Point, especially at night. You can look across the valley and see el capitan. One time, there were climbers camping the night on the face of el capitan and my kids were exchanging flash light flashes with them. They thought that was great!!
Take a drive up Tioga Pass and go to tenaya lake, Very beautiful
This is Tenaya Lake:

are you saying that you don't have reservations?
if not, YEAH, it'll be impossible to find a place in the Valley.
you'll have to stay outside the park and even that will be difficult this late in the game.
Thanks so much for all the replies. I think we will take a car as we will only be there 2 full days & 3 nights and want to see as much as possible in that short time. I appreciate the link to the web site and what to see. Great suggestions. Thanks!

In the valley.....almost impossible. However, there are a bunch of 1st come-1st served campgrounds and we have always been able to get a site there. Our favorite and one that takes bigger RVs is Bridalveil Creek. One of the biggest advantages is the temp. When the valley is 90-100 degrees, it's in the low 80s up there.
If you can arrive on a sunday or monday, you will be able to find a site.
This was our site at Bridalveil:
