Hello,
For those who full-time (workcamp/Volenteer) in a 5th wheel...what do you do for transportation in and around your location. Do you drive the big truck around, use a smaller car (how do you get it to your location) or other mode of trans to site see, work, visit etc?

We have a small 5th wheel which we tow with a half-ton Chevy and have workamped and been on the road for up to 12 weeks. We not only just use the truck for our transportation when on the road it's also our only vehicle when home. In spite of the poor mileage, it's still cheaper than the purchase, depreciation and other costs of owning a 2nd vehicle. I would do that even if we had a 3/4 ton truck. I figured that, if we had a small, high mileage car to drive around it might save $100 a month on fuel and that's not enough to make up for the extra costs. That wouldn't even pay the sales tax on a new Honda Fit.

For us to save more and keep me with him on the road fulltiming, we went to one vehicle. No additional insurance or car payments for 2nd vehicle is worthwhile.

DH drives to his jobsite everyday and I'm 'home' without transportation. If I really needed to, many RVParks have bus stops nearby or taxi's are available with a phone call.

The F450 can fit in nearly all parking lots. We don't park in street parking very often and fit in most parking decks. I honestly don't mind being chauffered around. It's especially nice to be in the same vehicle driving a 1000 miles to next location being the navigator. If we had an additional vehicle, we'd be on the phone or CB radio and I'd have a harder time enjoying the view.

We also fulltimed for 9 years with only one vehicle...a Freightliner FL60. It was fine. The only time we ever needed a second vehicle was when we flew somewhere and needed a car.

Unless you both have two jobs at different places, it's very doable with one vehicle. If one is at home, and really needed the vehicle for the day, the person could always take the other to work. Having to drive two vehicles to the next destination would not be pleasant for us. We converse a lot about what we're seeing out there, discuss where we're going to stop, point out for the driver when an obstruction or road turn is needed, etc. We would loose the enjoyment of travel if we couldn't talk as we do so.... and a CB just isn't the same. You can do it - It's no different than living in a house - really!

We've done fine with one vehicle. The extra expenses wouldn't be worth it.

My truck has been my daily driver for the past 5 years. I do miss my Saturn (previously a towed vehicle behind my motorhome), which I had to sell when I purchased my truck/fiver combo. That car was super reliable and good on mileage. I even considered towing the Saturn behind my fiver but decided I didn't want the hassle of worrying which states allow double towing, along with other considerations. I've even toyed with the idea of purchasing a small, older vehicle for use in my winter quarters (Yuma) but I would have to leave the vehicle there while I travel the rest of the year. So, I'm resolved to leave things the way they are, using my truck as my sole vehicle. There seems to be no other way...

We find it convenient to have two vehicles DW follows me in a Focus. She is my tail gunner when I turn on a blinker she'll make the lane change and give me clearance. We communicate via family radios. We figure the 30+ MPG's are better than the low teens of the DRW tow vehicle and much easier to manage in city traffic.

We drive the big truck around, F350. With diesel fuel at $4 a gallon, driving is not cheap.

When we started fulltiming in Sep 2010 we sold DWs car and became a one truck family. This has proven to be the best route for us. On the rare occasion that we had to have another car (only twice) we simply rent one. Rented one just last week for 4 days. Still much, much cheaper than owning, insuring, and maintaining another car.
