My owners manual says not to lube anything on the slide out mechanism.

Grease and oils attract dirt, I would use something like DuPont Dry Wax Silicone. I use it on my motorcycle chain and everything else I need to lubricate where dirt is an issue.

My trailer is 16 years old. No lube and still moving fine. So I guess its not necessary.

All the above is right on the money!

I'll add that the slideout manufacturers such as Lippert say that they're run during destructive testing up tp 10,000 in/out cycles without lube related failures.

Unless it becomes balky or noisy, in which case use a dry spray lube such as RemOil Dry Teflon or Slip Plate Dry Graphite sprays.

And you can use water to clean them if they get a build up of gunk or road debris. The #1 cause of slideout failure is electrical issues including bad switches or poor electrical contacts.

My posts shouldn't be taken for factual data. They are purely fictional, for entertainment purposes and should not be constituted as actually related to scientific, technical, engineering, legal, spiritual or practical advice. Amen.

I'm guessing that most that never use anything don't camp in a high salt air environment.
