I have been renewing my registration on-line for the last 6 or 7 years. You can now renew them up to three years at a time. A new plate is required every 5 years, but it will be mailed to you same as the registration. For the drivers license you will need to return to the state every 12 years. Licenses are renewed every 6 years and every other renewal needs a picture taken at the DPS.

We haven't been in Florida since May of 2005. So we've renewed plates on both the TV, 5er along with DL online at once just by clicking which items we wanted to renew. Then everything is mailed to our mail forwarder and onto our current location.

Since, I know when renewal time is coming up, it was easy to do it even before renewal forms were mailed to us.

We've also transferred tags to new vehicles multiple times all by mail. Forms are online.

Take a look at Alternative Resources in SD. They have a lot of info about SD.

No state income tax
No inspection
No inheritance tax
3 percent tax on RV purchase - none on RV being registered if 3 percent or more paid when registered in other state.
In Minnehaha county (Sioux Falls) you can be excused from jury duty on request. Probably in other counties as well.

Easy to register to vote. Do have to go back for new drivers license every five years.
You can renew up to a year early and can get an extension of up to a year.

My plates and registration for my motor home and Honda combined was $264 this year.
