Most of the cost will be labor, getting to the engine, taking everything off to get the head off to work on it, putting it all back together. For that, I would consider the extra few hundred dollars for a replacement head (used, or new third party). I don't know that I would want to pay what Cummins wants for a new head from their own replacement parts chain.

Cummins Power south told me they have a portable or "on wheels" machine shop they do alot of business with. I am hoping maybe he can just remove exhaust manifold, and patch or mend the crack in the exhaust port that is off of the head. I think I would probably go ahead and replace manifold while at it.

Dunno how relevant this is with today's metalurgy ..but depending on where the crack is and how bad, might be possible to stitch (weld) it up and machine it. Did a few of those while in the Army in the '80's. Might save some cash .. but the underlying weakness of why heat caused it to crack remains.

A good welder can do amazing things when it comes to metalurgy.

I don't know alot about these darn things, but I don't think you have the expense in a gasser when things go terribly wrong as is the case in the OP's story.

You could always weld and trade it in. LOL
$5k is not fun though. Any chance of a 3rd party part?
4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

No machine shop needed...JB Weld is a wonderful thing! It flat out WORKS.
