I am Looking to purchase a tent for teen daughter and myself. Models of interest: Suisse Sport Yosemite 10x8, Giga Tent Garfield 10x12, Coleman Cimmaron 14x8, Coleman Instatent 4 person and a Rokkpalisade 14x12. All got excellent reviews, but of course no such thing as perfect. Each had pros and cons noted. Our camping would be primarily in FL, so good ventilation in the tent as well water resistance and strong zippers to keep out spiders and ticks, a must! Ease of setup is also important to me. Thanks for any advice I can get.

A good Coleman works well enough for the one trip. No need to go too expensive. Check out your local Walmart for tent displays where you can see one set up. Or perhaps a camping store. Definitely carry bug repellant no matter how good the tent. Ticks and mosquitoes get inside whenever you go in and out. Ticks are great hitch hikers on pant legs.

I agree about the water proofing. You can also buy a can of fabric water proofing for the seams should it wear out before your trip is over. Most Walmarts carry it.

The last Coleman tent I purchased from Walmart has been excellent. The floor comes up the walls about 6" to minimize leakage. First time using it was during a flash flood in the desert. The tent floor was floating on 4" of water, but none was inside.

You do want one with a full rain fly that comes down over the windows. Otherwise the zippers will leak during a downpour. They can be rolled back for ventilation.

We tent camped many years when my 2 sons were home. Remember to take some type of rug to place at the entrance to wipe feet cause a lot of dirt gets on the floor. A small broom and if you have electric, we always carried a small fan to cool the tent.

Be sure to use synthetic sleeping bags and leave any expensive gear at home or in dry bags. Tents of this quality (outdated bottom-feeder brands) are basically "disposable" and offer little in the way of wind and rain resistance, integrity or quality. You end up paying more with this kind of tent as it has to be replaced more often than if you had bought a quality tent from a supplier like EMS or REI. If you don't know if tent camping is your forte, then here a big-box cheap tent is definitely the way to go - Just don't try to fool anybody about it...

I really like the look of LightSpeed tents, see lightspeedtents.com for videos showing how they go up and come down. Very quick and easy. Even though I have a travel trailer, I'm thinking about getting one of their tents for occasional use.

Thank you to those who responded to my post on tents. I am continuing to do my research and gaining alot of information in the process. My daughter just keeps saying buy something so we can go camping!

Agreed. Go buy whatever cheapie tent is on sale at Walmart or Target and go camp. The absolute best way to figure out what you need for camping is to go camping.

If you decide you really like tent camping you can go out and get good quality gear that you know will get a lot of use. It doesn't make any sence to me to go buy a $300 tent that gets used once when a $39 one from Target will do.
