those who visit the state parks of TN, I was browsing and see they have public swimming pools. WOW.

I also noticed they are first come first served. HOW hard are they to get into if I wing it and drive about 3 hrs. to a state park in TN. Am I risking not getting a site or should I probably be OK?

just wondering because the parks of TN sound wonderful from what I am reading.

thanks for any info.

Depends on when you are going, and what parks you are thinking of visiting. Maybe someday TN state parks will get up to date and have reservations online like everyone else does. What parks are you interested in?

They don't all have pools---only the ones labelled "resort parks". So check carefully. Resort parks also have a lodge with restaurant, and some have golf courses.

They are likely to be full on the weekends, especially since school is out and on the holiday weekend. If you get there mid-week you should not have a problem. Other times you need a reservation.

Check the sites to see if your rig will fit. I recommend calling the park office.

The parks near larger cities and the interstate highways are the most heavily use, plus Fall Creek Falls always has a good crowd.

the 2 that were right over the NC border in TN were Panther Creek state park and Roan Mountain state park. very reasonable drives for me. both did have the pools listed but closed on Mon/Tues.

but both said first come/first serve. I can make a reservation??

yes I should call each park to be sure I can fit. at least with reserveamerica they do list the lengths of the sites etc. so I can judge if the 5er will fit.

also with summer vacation coming up for kiddo, hubby does a rotating shift at work so I do have times when he is off on a Wed/Thurs/Fri/Sat. and I would think I could have a better chance at getting a spot.

I know that Roan Mountain SP is full most late spring, summer and early fall weekends. We have friends that will go and set up on Wednesday or Thurs in order to have a place for the weekend. Warriors Path in Kingsport is the same way. They are good parks, but they tend to fill quickly. A holiday weekend requires going on Tuesday to make sure you have a site for the weekend.

Ireally hope that Tennessee never goes to a reservation system! With reserve systems, a lot of campsites sit empty all week because all sites are reseved for two days on the weekend. If we are traveling, we will not stay at a park where we cannot stay over the weekend. Also, Tennessee has cut the parks budgets so much that facilites are not being maintained well.

John it is a shame to hear of budget cuts. the park system seems very nice. to have to lose part of the amenities etc would be terrible. sad the maintenance is lacking a bit with cuts.

I still think I will enjoy the TN state parks tho

We love Panther Creek in the summer time. Arrived during the week and had no problem choosing from several sites. It's a nice place and one night each week they have a gospel singing where the locals and campers can sing or enjoy the singing. I am not sure if it the whole season, but we enjoyed it. While we did not use the pool(my kids enjoyed playing in the creek), it looked well maintained.

When going home to Tennessee, I always have a backup plan. If Panther Creek is full then think about Cherokee Dam Campground on the other side of the lake. No reservation there either. There are some private CG's up Lakeshore but I have never camped there. If Cherokee Dam Campground is full then a nice ride over to Douglas Lake. Camping both above and below the dam.

Have never experienced all of these full, but I have not camped there on heavy holiday weekends either.
Good luck!
