We just replaced our tow vehicle with a '12 Ford Expedition. When we traded our Durango in, they told us we needed to leave the brake controller installed. So, I hopped on the web to order a new Prodigy P2, since that's what we had originally and were pleased with its performance. Do I also need to order a brake control harness? And, is it really easy to install the controller correctly, or should we head to the camper dealership to set us up? I imagine they are going to have to change the heights on the WDH anyway. Thanks in advance for advice!

Get the 20 dollar harness and the controller just plugs in under the dash...Trouble is finding the socket, on the 2011 it behind the glove box or under the dash to the right of the steering wheel.

I installed my brake controller the other day.

two screws to attach the mount,

four screws to attach the controller to the mount

one plug to install the controller.

maybe 20-30 minutes working slow.

If the vehicle has the tow package, the harness should be included with the new vehicle. Look in the glove box or console. If it is not in there, the dealer should give it to you free of charge.

Yes, harness should be in the glove box. However, that vehicle may not have had a tow package because Ford is putting their own brake controller on tow package. Or tow package may have been added on at the dealership.

The window sticker says HD Tow Package. But, I don't see any coil of wires with connectors on both ends...I think I'll call the dealership. When the guy sold it to us, he only quoted us $279 to install a brake controller. He had no idea what he was talking about, though, since he kept running back to the aftermarket sales girl for help. My point...I don't trust he'll be much help going forward, either.

While you will get a harness from Ford, you will have to connect some wires to the P2 to make it work. Most people just buy the manufacturer specific plug and play harness for about $15 shipped. It will take longer to find a Phillips #2 screwdriver than plug it in. Follow the instructions in the Prodigy manual for adjusting the gain. Very easy for even a novice.

Your '12 Ford does not have the built in brake controller setup? That seems odd with the "HD Tow Package" on the window sticker? Maybe it's still an additional option?

Not sure why you had to give up the brake controller you already had with the Durango in the trade?? I would have also asked for a credit on the remaining gas in the tank!

If you do need to get a new controller, like was said above.. Get the harness specific for your rig and it'll simply plug and play.. From there it's just a matter of mounting it.

Good luck!

Mitch

I've got a P3... the actual set up is as easy as pie. You shouldn't need any help to do it yourself, but if you are getting somebody to do the hitch for you than maybe they'll just do it for you no extra charge.

The OEM's give you an generic harness with a plug on on end that will fit the connector under the dash. Then you have to splice and solder the controllers generic harness to it. Save yourself the time had headache and order the vehicle specific harness from Prodigy LINK note they only list up to 2011

Don

BTW why did the dealer tell you, you had to leave the old controller. Was it screwed/bolted to the dash in such a way that it would leave holes? If not I would have to them to pound sand myself.
