Contamination during enrobing continues to be a likely point of inoculation of the dog food with Salmonella.

I note that the observations do not include the lack of cleaning, only issues of possible inability to fully clean due to equipment issues.

Most of the issues likely stem from employee training either not being done or not being enforced. Management will need to make sure manufacturing employees (and those involved with meeting customer delivery dates) understand that quality is more important than meeting their production schedule. This is a difficult concept for employees who have been taught that above all you must meet your production schedule. Even after management has trained employees on this concept it's not uncommon for production employees to be reluctant to shut down production (failing to meet shipping dates) because there was a minor issue with equipment (which they could "temporarily" fix with duct tape).

This analysis comes from my point of view as Sr. Process Scientist at a manufacturer of human diagnostic kits.

Yeah, I'm guessing it's probably pretty difficult to clean cardboard and duct tape.

Good grief.

Time to get things fixed.

Why didn't the contract customers of Diamond find these issues when they did an audit of Diamond's manufacturing plant (a common practice for manufacturer's who contract out work or who purchase critical items from suppliers)?

Possibly because those companies aren't any more committed to quality control than Diamond is? Sigh.

That would be my assessment as well; they likely didn't do an audit.

At least now, management at Diamond should be more committed and employees will understand the impact of not focusing on quality.

What????? Duct tape can't be sanitized?????? ;-)

When I think back on the stuff that used to go on in the food processing world.... as a teen, I was a "car hop" (no skates, though). My little cubicle was separate from the rest of the restaurant - there was only one door and it went outside. Not only did I handle the food orders and money with my bare hands - when we were busy, my "idle time" job was to put frozen, lard-covered french fries into individual-sized cardboard "trays". The cooks would take a tray of fries, dump it into the deep fryer - then dump it back INTO the cardboard tray when they were cooked. The only means of cleaning my hands was a damp towel I kept on the counter...... gaaaack. I still don't eat french fries.....

I read the report and I think for a production facility these would be considered fairly minor violations. I know it seems disgusting to some but unless you have worked in an industrial environment you don't realized how big and complex some of them are. These are all issues that can be easily fixed in relative short order and appear to be isolated.

Diamond dog food just had a recall of its dry dog food, I think mainly on the east coast. Kirkland uses Diamond.
