We just got the Novetel Verizon MiFi 2200. Got it for $40 from Ebay and 5 GB for $50 for a month, postpaid. Haven't really had the chance to try it out very well, but it looks like it will work very well. We'll probably only use a couple weeks at a time.

I just have Verizon turn on the 3G mobile hot spot on my iPhone.
I can turn it on and off whenever I want. No contract and I pay about $20.00 to add the feature.

We use Verizon pre-paid service (3G) with a CradlePoint router to share the connection between devices. We purchased it in 2010 and have used it a several times since. Coverage is pretty good in the areas we've camped. IMHO, it's a bit pricy ($50 for 5G/month, I think). We use it when needed, but try to use free WiFi at fast food establishments when we can.
Primarily, we use it for my work with a VPN connection and it has performed well. We will reload it next week for an upcoming trip to FL.

According to the service person I talked to with Verizon, the prepay data coverage isn't as extensive as the postpaid data coverage.

Even the Verizon coverage map, if you can get it to work, has a separate check box for prepaid coverage.

Prepay on Verizon is on the Verizon network. If you have a contract, coverage includes roaming partners. It works the same for prepay vs. contract phone customers.

so, if I get a Verizon USB prepay modem I will have the same coverage as a contract with them? I've had the contract modem with them when we full timed but only gone 3 months out of year now and don't need another contract for internet service..

I think the evidence in no. See fj12ryder's and my post above. Unfortunately, the Verizon coverage map is not working (at least, for me), but that they have a separate option for looking at prepaid coverage suggests that it is different.

Tom thanks Tom.. I've tried to look at their map also and no go.. today will 'line up' at their store and see if I can find anyone of any intelligence to answer some of my questions. We live in a small town and that itself is a challenge sometimes..
