Has anyone ever found a different solution for the jack knife couch to make it more comfortable that isn't really expensive? If we replace it with a different couch or recliners that starts to mount up in costs. I am 5'11" tall and when I have a 35 Boston Terrier on the couch with me, there isn't a lot of room. I've tried looking on the forums, but the modifications cost more money than what we want to spend (especially my husband). Hope someone can help. Thanks!!!

If I ever replace my couch it's going to be with a nice futon.

I took our jackknife out and replaced it with a Flair air hide-a-bed. It came as part of the deal, so I wasn't out any extra cash, but to buy one new is about $700 I think. Other than that, you might find a cheap, lightweight regular sofa at a discount furniture outlet. Just be ware it might not fit in the door. Our Flair didn't. I had to partially disasssemble it to get it in, but well worth the cost and effort. Nice to have the extra bed in addition to a comfy sofa.

How about a decent quality air mattress to lay on top? We did that with our old trailer that had a jack knife sofa, and nobody complained - have to admit I never tried to sleep there myself ...

We purchased an egg crate foam topper that we keep in the storage area and pull out for use.
It really helps with comfort. On some of the jack knife sofas there is a space between the back of the sofa and the wall that is big enough to store the egg crate foam in.
The cost of one of these toppers ranges from $20-30.. So it's worth a try.

I want to take out ours too. Sooo uncomfortable to sit on and use as a couch or folded out flat like a bed. Ours is mounted to a wood platform with bolts, not the floor.
I am getting prices on a 32" x 64" custom cut mattress with coils to fit on the wood platform and making mine into a "Day Bed" with big pillows.
What size is the space you have to work with if you take it out? You may be able to fit a Twin Size bed in there and put storage underneath.

It was the first "update" to our 5th wheel. DW said: "Get rid of that uncomfortable couch!" We are not in need of any additional sleeping room so we replaced it with the center part of a sectional (no arms).

We have a jack-knife as well, very uncomfortable to sleep/sit on. I like the foam Idea. They even sell memory foam for a little extra that might help.

We usually open it into the sleeping position then the wife purchased a corner high rise pillow with arm rests (folks use them for sitting up reading in bed) and she uses it as a lounge. Must work as I have seen her eyes shut many times hi!

We also have the jackknife couch in our 5th wheel, what an uncomfortable place to sit and worse to sleep on. We solved the sitting situation by placing a piece of plywood under the cushions. Gives a comfy sitting area now. For sleeping we take the mattress off and put it on the floor, with an air bed on top. Our local home improvement store even cut the plywood to size. Hope this is another maybe that will work idea for you!!
