We sign the final papers on our house in two weeks when we begin fulltiming. We sold our 2nd vehicle and called Doherty Insurance (GMAC policy) in Sioux Falls, SD, to cancel the insurance on that car. We expected a refund of about $140.

They said that we no longer have a multi-car discount so we have to pay them more instead of getting a refund. The truck and the car together came to $887 together. Now the insurance for just the truck is over $900. So instead of getting our refund, we pay more.

We are shocked. What would you do? We are thinking of just paying the extra money and finding a new insurance company at the end of our policy period which is Jan. 2.

What insurance companies would you recommend?

I'm in the same boat, but not getting hosed at the outset. . . but, my policy of the past was very land/residential centric - I've read on these forums the usual : Gieco and Progressive. I read pretty negative things about Good Sam, but check that out your self - one ringer that I never heard of was Foremost - and I'm going to be checking out Hartford via AARP. . .I had Hartford for business insurance and never had to use them, but they were responsive at all times and good at making adjustments to save the business money. .

Two things that will concern me - if I can get any kind of low level biz insurance, liability mostly and whether I can get anything like the liability umbrella I've had over the past few years, that as the saying goes, keeps an adjuster at the table on your side. . .

Please report in and I'll do likewise . . . whew. . .

Do you really need to wait until the end of your policy? You should get a prorated refund as soon as you cancel this policy. Or, maybe use this two weeks to find a new company.

Yes no reason to wait .. You'll get a refund on your existing policy from the day you cancel it. Shop around. I've heard that anyone who hasnt shopped their insurance in 3 years Is probably paying too much. Whenever I do ( shop my insurance ) I find another co that always seems to beat the prior lowest. Remember you are betting you will crash and need them to pay out they are betting you won't ! they aren't your friend like they want you to believe.
It's a contract for payment. Don't like the contract ? Find someone else.

My post's are my opinion The advice, comments etc are free and worth what you paid

I did shop around and coincidentally we use the same outfit in SD, no issues at all, although our situation is a tad different. Good luck.

Simple logic would say that one car (or anything) does not cost more than two cars! Call them again, speak with someone in authority, and if they try to pull that then cancel today and report them to the Insurance Commissioner for that state.

Agree with the others. You don't have to wait until the end of the policy..you should be able to cancel anytime & get a pro-rated refund. Just need to make sure you sign up to another insurance for the same day you cancel (so you're not left uncovered).

Everytime we renew our insurance we shop around. We've tried all the RV Insurance companies (e.g. Millers RV, Gilbert RV, Farm & City), but Geico always ends up being the best deal. So, for the past 2 years that's who we've had.

Howdy!

If your a vet or anyone in your family has served I would check with USAA. They gave us the best quote and we went with them last time.

Just went thru this. States and situations are different so don't take what we did as the best thing for you. We tried Good Sam, Poliseek, Miller agency and several others. We ended up with Progressive for the vehicles and Blue Sky RV for the full timers insurance. Progressive would have written it all, but for us their RV insurance was wrong. There are three ways companies insure RV's. Some will insure replacement (you have a total loss they buy you the same or similar rig). Some use agreed value (you agree on the value, usually the original purchase price and they will pay that. With ours it also goes up with inflation). The others use the actual NADA value at the time of loss (which means you can't even buy the same rig if it is destroyed on the way home from the dealer). Some also use a combination of at least two (Good Sam would do replacement cost for us, 2010 rig, for three more years and then book value) Since it is our home I wouldn't sign unless it was replacement or agreed value, but it does cost more so you have to make the decision. Also check the policies closely. They know they're competing so they will low ball the liability for instance to get your business, but it may not be the coverage you need.
