Make sure your trailer brakes are working like they are suposed to, I don't have an exhaust brake either and I've pulled double over all the route your taking. 395 is not a curvy road and most of the downgrades have straight long runouts to them. The traffic on 99 is worse than any down hill you will encounter.

Oh, I'd LOVE to get the exhaust brake installed. We surely could have used them in Virginia last year! It's sounding more and more like we'll be taking I-15 to Mojave (I need to stop at a geocache near Edwards to drop off a travel bug) then up 14 to 395 and on up to Lee Vining. Then visit the park in comfort in my son's car.

Hey, coolbreeze01, they DO install exhaust brakes in Vegas!! And I'm getting one. This whole "mountain" thing has been nagging and nagging at me so I finally bit the bullet, took some money out of savings, and there will be a new BD exhaust brake installed on my Dodge before we leave Vegas.

Penny.. I-15 doesn't go to Mojave (of which I'm sure you already know). You pick up Hwy 58 out of Barstow and go west to Mojave. Since you have to go to (or near) Edwards AFB, then yeah, you need to follow 58 west to Hwy 14 and then north to 395.

When 14 meets 395, look off to your east and you'll see Ridgecrest....be sure to wave.

Alabama Hills are at Lone Pine, you'll come to them 1st, stay at Bolder Creek RV park and see the area. As you go north on 395 between Lee Vining and Bridgeport you'll see the turn off to Bodie ghost town. The miners didn't packup, they just left in the early 30's. Like I said tons of history along 395. You can tour Madagaskar where the Japanise were inturned during the war.
