I have an idea for seatbelts on dinettes and was wondering what people think of it. Many people would like to put their children to bed going down the road in the RV but would like them buckled in. What if the dinette had a seatbelt that was just like the straps in a car seat but enlarged? There would be two belts over the shoulders and one between the legs. The belts would be bolted in the same place as typical seat belts below the cushions. This would allow the child to be lying down but secured during a crash. Any thoughts or ideas?

Sounds like a good idea. Much more comfortable than sitting in a car seat with head flopping around.

Seat belts are designed to apply load over a large area across your chest that can withstand a high load. They have been thoroughly tested by the auto industry in crash tests.
Your idea is better than allowing them to be loose, but I just do not see anyone putting the money into a belt that applies pressure to someones groin. Head first with belts on either side of the shoulder blade would likely work, but who is going to spend the money to get the crash tests done and get it approved? Car companies do not want it and MH companies can not afford it.

What about the table top? It would have to be removed.

I would think it would require an awful lot of engineering to actually be accepted If the child slides forward could choke them If you plan on selling it you better have awfully good peoduct liability insurance. Manuf are sued all the time regardless if it is a design flaw or not

There has to be a way secure a child that doesn't strap them down like an accident victim. If pets can be secured, children must be. This sounds like a great opportunity for someone to invent a harness just for sleeping children.

Talking about seat belts, What about those many thousands of children transported by school buses every day around our nation? Are they belted in? If so, very few and far between have this option. Seat belts do save lives, we just have to use common knowledge when applying this practice. Thus any attempt to save additional lives is noteworthy.

I think your idea is better than nothing but I doubt you would find anything substantial enough to mount them to. I know my dinette is built out of kindling.

They would be mounted to where the existing booth seatbelts are.

Just get a good Child car seat from Recaro. Belts can get around a neck. Netting works best.
