THIS is called a Surge tank and is connected to the cooling system by 3 hoses coolant constanly circulates thru the tank this is Not an overflow recovery tank like on cars this tank has the pessurized radiator cap

Tank leaked
Loss of coolant let engine get hotter than normal which resulted in more loss
The more coolant lost the hotter the engine got

Options, always have options, and the journey goes much smoother

Great Luck to you, MrWizard. I'm heading to Ely tomorrow AM. I'm hoping I don't have any more trouble either. But Flagstaff is great!

Mr. Wizard, you taught us a wonderful lesson. We won't push our engines when running hot.... stop NOW!

Thank you for sharing your story. It helps us all!

I agree with Mr. Mark. I think we are all better educated as to what to do when overheating. Probably also for low oil pressure. Thanks MrWizard.

Yes. Thanks for sharing.

And for all of you its time to check your recovery tanks for cracks and crazes. Mine was spider cracked all over and now has a brand new on, expensive I thought at the time, but now I feel it was a bargain.
I understand its the UV rays that deteriorate these plastic tanks and I am going to fabricate a cover to protect it from the sun.

Don't most DPs have temperature gauges? Knowing what the critical internal temperature is for an engine model might be good to know. Limp as far as that point then shut it down and let it cool.
