A leaking or plugged intercooler can burn a piston in a minute. Check out this option also.

I believe running too lean can burn 'em too. Verdad?

Not on a diesel.
Now that I think about it....you are correct.
It could with gas though, causing detonation.
Gas should ideally burn at stoich - otherwise one gets crazy hot spots.

I know a guy who started filling diesel tank with gas at BP. Which has green handles for all pumps. Only 10 gals until he realized what he was doing.

I caught a guy at work filling up a gas tank with diesel. The garage had to drain and flush the tank. If I hadn't caught it, he just wouldn't have gone any farther than the gas in the carburator bowl. It would have been worse if he had filled a diesel tank with gas and no one caught him, the heads might still be in orbit (this was back in the '70s).

I will defer to others with more knowledge, but my understanding is that this is not an aluminum block, it doesn't have sleeves/liners and doesn't use them unless over bored
Cummings 5.9L 6BT

it doesn't need oat coolant and doesn't have cavitaion worries

Just grind some of that carbon off the pistons and slap them back in there, MrWizard. Good as new.

Glad it wasn't as bad as we all thought to begin with.

The black junk on the top of the piston looks like carbon build up from lack of sufficient air or a bad injector. The scuffing on the side of the piston will probably be from over heating or less likely from lack of lubrication. Do to the side damage you did require replacement of the pistons and machine work on the block. Good luck. I have the same engine and mine overheated also. I was lucky in that my wife and I smelled the anti-freeze and the low coolant alarm came on. This happened on our way home from just purchasing our coach. The water temp gauge and idiot light quite working. Fortunately for us there was no significant damage and after the fan belt replacement we were on our way.

After severe overheating as in this case, just how much of the engine can you reliably reuse? I am no diesel expert - my experience is less than 6 months - but I would not be comfortable re-using any of the pistons or the heads! Am I wrong?

You may want to ask NAD if they can Magnaflux (or other nondestructive test) the head to check for cracks, just to be sure everything will work properly when reassembled.
