I may end up towing a Chevrolet Tahoe to Texas, on a one way trip for the Tahoe. Since it's not set up for towing, I was thinking of a tow dolly. Does anyone know what's involved with towing a Tahoe with the rear wheels on the ground? Do you have to disconect the drive shaft or ?? I have no idea. Looking for suggestions and info. Thanks

If its 4 wheel drive with 2 speed transfer case put transfer case in neutral and tow away.

What rescue7 said was good.

If you are renting the dolly, you can always consider a 4 up tow trailer too.

4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

I had a 1988 Chevy Tahoe 4 X 4 and towed it for about 40K miles on all 4 down.I had to get a Remco drive shaft and to disconnect it when towing. It was a royal pain in the butt.

You should probably check the Owners Manual to be sure, but for all the 4X4 vehicles I have owned, the Book specifically FORBIDS dolly towing!
However, you CAN probably tow it on a dolly IF you disconnect the rear drive shaft.
If it has a NEUTRAL in the transfer case, you PROBABLY can tow it four down.
Of course, you can always put in on a trailer, IF your tow vehicle can handle the weight.

Be safe. Disconnect the rear driveshaft. Removing four bolts is cheaper and easier than replacing a transmission or transfer case.

I think a tow dolly possibly is NOT the way to go....so I'm thinking of a car trailer. Only place I can find to rent one, one way is Uhaul......and they're not sure if the Tahoe will fit. Penseke according to the website only rents a trailer to pull behind their trucks. Any idea where I can rent a car trailer for one way? Thanks

Good luck finding one from U-Haul to carry your Tahoe. They wouldn't rent me one to carry a Buick Roadmaster back from Chicago a couple of years ago.

Why not simply have it shipped on a carrier??? I used to use DAS to ship my hot rods and found them to be reasonably priced and efficient. Ship terminal to terminal for the cheapest rate. If you are not on a time table you shipping costs go down as they can simply add yours to another truck already enroute to Texas. Worth a call. Now if you're already going to Texas then that's a different story. You could rent a trailer round trip and bring back a car with you when you return and maybe make some money on the deal....Dennis
