Yeah because engineers did such a great job with the injectors on the 01-04, or the overheating of the LLY, or the 6.0 PSD. Why have a $50,000 dollar truck and a $50,000 corvette when you can make your truck kick a corvettes ass for alot less then that and then hook up to your trailer and go home.
Cracked crank shaft? Really Once you get to around 600hp on a duramax your gonna need rods thats the week point no the the crank.
What year truck Jim? There is a member here (killerbee) who most likely can help out your limp mode. X2 on more HP with the Allison, they seem not like it so much.
The truck in questions is a 2008 2500 4WD Crew Cab pulling a Monte Vista 31.5 with a weight of around 10,000lbs. The truck as 55K on it, its been running for over a year with the Mini maxx set on Mild at all times with no trouble. I also have a 75gal acc. tank that I generally fill to about 50 gals. Gets service every 5000 with new fuel filter. It had gone over 1000 miles on this trip before the Limp mode problem, that didn't develope until we reach the Mountains. Reguardless of somes doughts, the chip does make a big difference in fuel use, I check it manually every two or three tanks, the trucks computer on fuel use is off several gal. When I figure out what causing the problem I will post the solution. I am going to upgrade the chip tomorrow, also will find out what GM tech has to say about the codes the service Mec. is sending them. The first thing I did when it went into Lemp Mode the first time was replace the fuel filter. I have been fueling from here to the keys and back, thought I may have pick-up some bad fuel.

I have an 09' GMC DuraMax and with the FW I gross at 18,000# +/-. I can spin the tires when I take off from a stoplight. Why would I need more power?
Now to get serious, this winter I made the trip from Grand Rapids, MI to Yuma, AZ and back, ran 65 mph both ways all the way but slightly different routes. 11.07 mpg going west and 12.1 mpg going east. Average for the trip 11.54 mpg all data entered into excel spreadsheet. Running empty (same sppeed) I can expect 20mpg in cold weather and 21 to 22 in warm weather.

My sons '02 Dmax/A goes into limp mode due to his oversize tires when he pulls his 5th wheel trailer especially when pushing hard.
He installed a adjustable programmer with the boost/EGT/etc. No more limp mode when pushing hard.

my previous truck to my 2012 denali dually was a fully modified lifted/chipped/built motor/trans 2004 duramax. The allisons are great transmissions and they are tough but ARENT made to hold the extra power. Their by far the strongest transmission on the market. If your adding anything over 100HP your seriously looking for trouble, even at a 100HP tune id be seriously babying the 4-5 or 5-6 shift. Once you slip the transmission it gets easier and easier to do so until eventually itll start slipping with no tune and your forking out huge money for a new clutch pack. I hate to be the barer of bad news but if you slipped her repeatedly youve cooked your clutch pack. Trust me i know the thrill of having a tuned truck, i ran 900HP and it was fun! but i also eliminated every weak link to do that. You seriously shouldnt even need to chip these new trucks. Thats the main reason i got rid of that duramax was for more reliability. If your looking at still running a tuner, i would seriously recommend replacing your clutch pack with NADP, ATS, or suncoast parts. AND getting a transgo JR to up your line pressures to make your shifts firmer. These tuners have the software to automatically change your shift patterns and make them stiffer BUT your line pressures arent high enough to properly account for the new software telling your transmission to shift firmer. THe transgo kit comes with me pistons/valves that help this. Again i try and tell everyone that says... i want to throw a new turbo on.... put a 200HP tune on my truck, bigger tires whichever... its ALL about eliminating the weakest link. Unfortunately its not entirely about plug and play if you want to maintain reliability.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I have always felt that if you "chip," you will eventually pay the price.
My advice, pull the chip.
Others, of course, have a different opinion.
X2
X3 and I have a D-Max
x4 New dmax has almost 400 HP and a whopping 800 ft lbs of torque
(OK its like 397 and 795.... still) ?!?!?!?!
My last trade (I don't want to get into any snits here but, ) was a PSD OK in fairness it was two generations ago 6.0 litre "04" (crew/long/PSD/stock 350)but my new stock dmax will walk off and leave it behind, with a much heavier load. I am sure they "all three" have much more now with R and D and programming. As was said earlier the mfgr's put a lot of testing in them and have them tuned just about as far as they can go and still have the longevity they need to be a good viable TV Just my humble opinion!

Say what Well maybe not ordered from the factory but you most certainly can from Mopar Performance and retain your full Chrysler factory warranty too boot. I would bet you can from GM's performance parts arm also Ford has them.
