I am so confused.. Driving 35' no tow. Will be in Hermosa, SD. thinking about doing badlands on way out. up 79 to I90 so. to Wall & do the loop. now.. do I:
1) retrace back to 79 down to 18 over thru Lusk to south I25
2) retrace back to 79 down to 385 ( 19/130 ) to I75
3) stay on I90 to Nebraska 83 to I80 to I75

Also, I need to stop overnite somewhere no matter which route.
Looking for good roads, dont want to dilly dally but if something is a must do it might be worth going one route over the other. This will be mid July.

How are the roads on ea. of the routes? Mountains, Hills, Flat?

Yep I'm a rookie.. first long trip. S.F. calif to Gillette Wy, to Custer SP, Colo Springs, St. George, Ut. then back home. These are my must stops family/friends etc.

Slight hijack if anyone can help...

We'll be making the Badlands Hwy 240 loop from Wall to the east exit of the Badlands NP to get back on I-90. We're traveling east through SD.
Is Hwy 240 an ok route to take our 36' 5th wheel on?

I think this answer will also help the OP. (If not, sorry for the hijack! I just didn't want to start two Badland threads in a row.)

If you're already in Hermosa, I would reconsider backtracking to the Badlands. I always used your route #1 option, 79 & 18 are good roads.
For your overnite stop you can stop short of halfway at the Glendo Reservoir/state park, or push on toward Cheyenne. Both areas have several good RV parks. Its critical to time your next leg to avoid the rush hour on I25 through the Denver metroplex.

The Badlands park has a very nice campground at the eastern end of the loop through the park. A RV can easily drive the loop. Have a good trip!
