Ipads are ONLY wifi capable.
Depends on which iPad one gets. There is an iPad model with no cellular connection and their are iPad models with cellular connection. The Verizon version of the New iPad has these cellular protocols.
4G LTE (700 MHz)3; CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz); UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
Quote: If you want one that has the usb ports for mobile broadband internet access you have to buy the one that costs $500.00 plus. I can buy laptops with 100X the memory and is secure internet capable all day long for that kind of money. So for me it's a NO on the ipad.
None of the iPads have a USB port. All of them can use USB via a dock connector to USB adapter cable.
Quote: The ipad is nothing more than a large Iphone, and I already have one of those.
There are apps unique to the iPad and many iPhone apps have been enhanced to take advantage of the larger "real estate" of the iPad.

There are limitations to the iPad. My wife and my 11 year old son keep coming across websites that don't display correctly. Also there are limitations to what you can connect to it and printing can be a challenge. I think it's a great device but I personally wouldn't want it to be my only computer.
Agree 100 percent. We are a completely Apple household and have at least one of just about everything they make but if I had to choose between the iPad and my MacBook Pro, then it would be the MacBook hands down. I asked the wife and she said she would take the Air she has over the iPad even though she spends more time on the iPad.
One big bother for her and I is that printing can be a PITA with the iPad. We have 3 printers for different things and we can only print to one of them, and that is only sometimes when it feels like it. Most times the sheet comes out with 2 hearts, a question mark and the numbers 0 through 9 all on one line and then 3 blank pages.
I like the iPad, but there is no way it can serve as my main computer. It just is too limited. Heck, it can't even store my whole iTunes library.

I didn't interpret the OP as only one or the other but rather whether to use laptop or IPad when traveling. The only thing we can't do on our IPad when we travel is transferring our digital pictures from the camera to computer thus freeing up space on the camera card. We just carry more camera memory. So for traveling we only carry our IPads and IPhones now.

There is a camera connection kit for the iPad. It is made to transfer pics from camera to iPad.

Limited space. Once you get it loaded with apps, music and movies, there isn't much room for pictures. Actually in my case, no room for pictures.
I wish the iPad had a SD slot that was actually usable.

OKay, so if I were to do a laptop, can it connect via cellular capability? Or is there another way? I don't want to depend on WiFi which isn't as reliable as cellular access while in motion.

If you have smartphone and a laptop I have a hard time understanding the need for a tablet, the form and function just doesn't make sense to me.
My Samsung GN has a large screen, USB, HDMI and both Wifi and 4G, my laptop has a great 12" screen and small footprint with full keyboard and of course Wifi. It's just as easy to carry that around than a tablet, why carry the tablet which isn't even a phone and no broadband (unless you want to pay over $400 for a tablet with 3G/4G)?

I have an 64 iPad. It is about 3/4 full. Mostly music and some apps. I have a MacBookPro that I like very much. Also have a 64 iPhone 4s that allows me to connect all three devices to the internet. Each has it's unique features and speeds. I do different things on each device. I think the only thing I do in common on all three is listen to music, play games and surf the internet. The MacBook is the only one that has the Office Suite for Apple installed. I also use it to sync and charge the other two.
