I use the cruise only on flats, which accounts for very little of my towing in NM. I find that the tranny downshifts too much, when trying to maintain speed on the up and downs.

The A4 can pull the RV although it has a payload problem so I use the chipped truck instead.

I personally prefer the Chip Truck

Slowing down really helped. The last pull, I took my time, kept the speed to 60 MPH, and got just over 13 MPG's.

This will work - but I wouldn't recommend it....although I've done it. I do keep my distance

None of the above will "increase your mileage"....

That is not correct. I have 2 chipped vehicles right now and both have increased mileage - especially my Audi A4.

I haven't read much but what I have read has me believing that chipping a vehicle will improve the performance in one area but then consequently will go down in another. What was the cost/downside of chipping your TV?

This subject comes up a lot ... The one thing that will noticeably improve gas mileage while towing a given trailer is slowing down. (This has the added benefit of reducing stress on the TV and trailer tires.)

A couple ways to improve gas mileage if a new trailer has yet to be bought: buying a small and lightweight enough trailer that you can tow it with a more fuel efficient vehicle (doesn't help much while towing but can result in better mileage while NOT towing), and/or buying a trailer with a more aerodynamic profile (e.g. the fiberglass eggs, AirStream - the V-nose trailers don't qualify as they still have flat backs).

Chipping: It might improve gas mileage, at the cost of reduced power, lower shift points, etc... It's a compromise that one could also attain by buying a smaller, more fuel efficient, TV in the first place.

Back to the drafting; many drivers avoid the big rigs. When towing on the open interstate I actually join a 4-5 rig convoy to increase mileage. Having at least one in front of you and one at your side you will see a major increase in mileage. As long as you are not tailgating I find it to be the safest place to be. They know what they are doing and they know you're there.
