I am NEW to camping and my wife and I just bought a 33 ft. Keystone Sprinter used. My question is do we leave the GREY and BLACK Water valves closed until they get almost full or can we just leave them open going to Sewer tank? I know this is a crazy question but we have had no help explaning the working operations of the systems.... Thanks for the help in advance.... Alan

It's best to open the black tank valve only when emptying a full or almost-full tank. The big volume of liquid in a full tank will better carry the solids out.

If you leave it open to the sewer all the time, the liquid will exit but solids tend to settle in the tank.

Welcome to the Forum..your question is a common one and an important one.

Leave both tanks closed ESPECIALLY THE BLACK TANK until they are at least 2/3rds full.

This will keep the solids from building up and drying out in the black tank causing you a great deal of grief.

Empty the black tank first. Then the empty the mostly full gray tank. This will help flush out your sewer hose that may have some remaining solids from the black tank.

Definately for the black tank. Leave it closed until it is 2/3 to 3/4 full before dumping. This allows enough liquid to accumulate to cause everything to flow out of the tank (ususally). Anything less and "stuff" isleft behind that could accumulate and create other problems. If you have to dump it before 2/3 then add water until it is.

Grey is similar. You can leave the grey open so you don't need to worry about it filling up and overflowing into the shower. BUT you will want to close it a day or so before you need to dump the black so you can use the grey water to clean out the dump hose as well as clean out the stuff that accumulates in the grey from dishwashing/showers/etc. Remember dump black first then grey.

As stated above and like me, if sometimes you end a camp trip with not a lot of water in the tanks, you should add water to both until they are at least 2/3rds full and then dump.

The reason for flushing grey tank last is the soapy water will help rinse the poop residue out of the hose as it goes. Learning the RV stuff is a bit like fishing only here folks are more than heppy to help. Welcome and feel free to ask anything you like. These folks here have helped me out of several situations. Probley saved me unold dollars. I wanted to have the entire forum over for barbecue. Wife said no way. Too bad.
