As the navigator, I use MS S&T's to outline initial route with the help of iPhone Maps App because it will sometimes give us more alternatives and different driving times.
Then plug stops into Ford Navigation as we're driving. But sometimes follow along with iPhone Maps App using Current Location if we're in an unfamiliar location.

Be careful of GPS when towing. We have had two experiences where the GPS took us on a shortcut. Luckily there we no low bridges, but a few of the turns were fun at 55 feet long!

Can anyone tell me how the GPS portion works with your laptop? Or, can you just use the GPS that is on our phones? I was looking to buy a new GPS system (because I lost our old one, oops!) I like the thought of having the large screen of the laptop, but I would like to make it as simple as possible to use.

The Pharos GPS unit that comes with Microsoft Streets and trips plugs into a USB port. It is basically a GPS antenna only. S&T automatically detects it.
It can be used with other programs such as Trailer Life Directory software.

Ok all this imput is great, thanks alot but which GPS do I need to use with Micro Soft Streets? I have the LT-40 (USB)for the Delorme but it is not seen by the software. I downloaded the trial version from MS. I have a Garmin nuvi 260w (older version) pluged in to USB and it too is not seen.
Thanks for all the help.

We have used both Streets and Trips and DeLorme and we prefer DeLorme. It certainly will do what you want. You start your routing with your home starting point and then put in your destination - THEN you go along the route and add your stops. It will route the trip completely stopping at all of the points that you have specified. Then save the route to your laptop and load it when you start your trip. For us DeLorme did this much better than Microsoft.
As to your question about what GPS to use with Streets and Trips - Microsoft sells a USB receiver with some versions of the software - just like the LT-40. The LT-40 should also work with Streets and Trips - make sure Streets and Trips has all of the settings correctly set for GPS routing.

The laptop GPS units are extremely easy to use. They have a little receiver that plugs into a USB port and goes up on your dashboard. The DeLorme looks like a minurature mouse. Then you open the software application and tell it to fire up the GPS. Load any saved route setup you have and tell it to navigate. Then you are off. With the DeLorme, you turn the volume up a bit on the laptop and Anna (that is the default voice in Microsoft) will tell you when you have a turn coming up and what you need to do. You can also see yourself driving along on the screen. It is rather James Bondish. The DeLorme has WAAS capability and is extremely accurate. With the power of the laptop, it is extremely fast to sync up with the satellites and start giving accurate position. Much faster than a hadheld unit where you have to wait about 2 minutes if you haven't used it in a couple of weeks.

I know this thread has been sleeping for a while but would like to add my 2 cents worth. I have been using the DeLorme GPS with Street Atlas since about 2001 and have been very happy with it. If you already have the lap top, you can have a great GPS system for about $50.00. I have tried several others and none of them compare.
