The first thing I did when I purchased our "new" motorhome a couple of months ago was to buy new tires. Last weekend we took our first trip in it. Upon returning home I had to maneuver (sp?)around an island at the entrance to our subdivision, and accidentally hit a large boulder with the tip of my exhaust pipe. The pipe moved back against the tire, and one of the hanger brackets cut a 6" long 3/8" deep cut in one of the center treads on the tire. The cut is only about 1/3 the depth of the tread. I was about to go and buy a new tire, but I thought I'd first get some opinions here as to whether or not that is necessary. Any comment would be appreciated.
The good news here is that the boulder didn't hit anything else on the motorhome.

NO, if it's only in the wear portion of the tread. It will go away if you put enough miles on your coach.
I doubt if the tire guy would try to sell you a new tire, if you trust him, he would be the person to ask.

I wouldn't. You state the cut is in the tread only. And not the belts or strength structure of the tire. If that is the case, it will be fine. But the real questions might be, are you sure the cut is only 3/8 deep? How wide is the cut? Did it close up completely after being cut? Or is the some portion that is gouged out? So just be sure you know how deep the cut is. And if it is like you say, just run it and watch it.
It is a rear wheel and part of a dual set. So not likely a safety danger.

Mmmmm this is a tuff one to answer. I think if it were me I'd replace the tire. However, I'm anal when it comes to these types of things.

The cut is more of a gouge. It is about 1/4" wide and 3/8" deep and 6" long, on the edge of one of the treads. It is not a clean cut.

On the edge of a tread....and you can be sure it is 3/8 deep....run it. But you will lose major points if entering into a tire beauty pageant.

if in doubt, take it to the tire people. because it is not worth the total cost of the coach and your safety to even think it might be ok.
a tire vs. life and coach.
there is no contest.
