My husband and I have been contemplating building our own travel trailer, we both love to build and are excited about building something to specifically meet our needs. My question is, has anyone else out there had any experience with home made trailers? we are specifically looking at plans from "Tiny Homes" . Any problems with them staying together on the road? are they legal on the road?

Have you considered starting with a utility trailer as a shell?

I thought about it once but the numbers don't add up. You can buy a used one and gut it cheaper.

I've looked at most of the Tiny Homes floorplans. For the price and sq footage, a TT is better. If I want a tiny home that moves easily, I'd get a Truck Camper.

Have you considered buying a TT with the windows in a spot you will like. Then gut the trailer and build it up to your needs.

There was a show on this weekend "extrme Rv's" and this guy was taking 16' traiers and makeing tiny homes out of them.. like the kind you can buy at Homedepot or Lowes.. with enough left over for a front porch..
Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics...

I have a friend that used the plans from "Tiny Homes" which was built on a 20 ft utility bumper pull trailer. He built it to use at BBQ cook-off's and had great success with it. He has towed it a lot of miles with no problems. His has bunk beds, bathroom and a large ktichen sink. It is self contained with water, hot water and holding tanks.

We have thought about starting with a horse trailer and designing our own, but something about the wood home must appeal to the gypsy in me. We are just concerned about how a wood trailer will hold up on a trip across the country.

Everything on wheels was wooden or mostly wood with some iron or steel for most of history. Of course, they plodded along at a couple mph. But that IRT show has mostly wooden cargo trucks hauling in the Himalayan mountains. And I found this: Airstream
