All,

The DPO of my fiver applied some sort of unknown sealer to the longitudinal seams (along the gutters)of my fiver. It looks almost like a latex paint and was clearly brushed on. It would appear to be preventative since there are no signs of leaks. Additional sealing is good except...

It's peeling. Badly. This stuff does not adhere to EPDM well. It could be DPO didn't prep the surface properly, or it's not intended for EPDM roofs. In either case, it looks like crap. What's the best way to get this stuff off? I don't even know what it is. I can hardly imagine I will get more that 50% removed by peeling away at the loose parts. Is there something I can put over the radius of the roof edge to cover it up or is it better to just let it flake away on its own? Let me be clear by saying this stuff is NOT part of the roof membrane. It's clearly something added, perhaps unnecessarily.

Do the longitudinal seams need to be resealed? There's no Dicor along the gutters... I thought the seal was butyl under the gutters?

What do you suggest? I'm going up on the roof this week to apply Eternabond to the vents, front and rear cap. I'd hate to apply 60' of Eternabond to the longitudinal seams if it's not needed. Stuff ain't cheap, and I may want to replace the roof membrane someday so the less to remove later the better.

Thanks for your thoughtful advice.

it's probably silicone or latex caulk which isn't compatible with EPDM roofs. Alot of work to remove without tearing up the EPDM rubber, I'd just eternabond the bad areas, or buy the thick eternabond (4") and cut it in half. If you ever need to replace your roof you wouldn't have to remove it anyway, it will just come off with the roof membrane.

I know exactly what stuff your talking about. Someone put the same sloppy brushed on garbage on an aluminum roofed TT I had. If you leave it alone, it will eventually all fall off. Fortunately with the aluminum roof I was able to use a 3M scotchpad in an angle grinder and remove it easily.

I don't think you need to reseal along there unless there's an obvious reason. I never have.

I would keep picking at it over time until it is all off then put the proper Dicor sealant on it.

I would just go up on a ladder once a month with a toothbrush and lightly brush it until it is all gone. Don't use your own toothbrush unless you buy a new one to replace it.

Take a piece and see how it responds to acetone or laquer thinner. These are recommended for cleaning rubber roofs. I used detergent on my roof, but it was just dirty, and recall that these products were also recommended for cleaning for Eternabond application.

Thanks to all.

I'm going to try brushing off the loose gunk with a medium bristle brush. What doesn't come off will flake eventually I'd imagine. The medium bristle brush is the recommended cleaning method in the roof manufacturer documentation that came with my trailer.

DPO applied this stuff in a 6" swath covering the entire radius of the roof edge so it's going to look crappy for a while. At least DPO performed preventative maintenance. Although not done well, it's clear the unit was not neglected so I suppose that's good.

I do believe it is that white elastomeric roof coat stuff.

I had a couple little v tears along the radius of my 5er so I cleaned real good then alcohol scrubbed. Put on a strip of eternabond on the radius, It didn't like wrapping over the edge. Didn't look good either (too white). Ended up taking it off and just putting dabs of Dicor caulk. A coat of the Kool Seal over the caulk feathered it all in and matched the color.
