I know nothing about fifth wheels, I barely know about TT's. I like fifth wheels but my DH says we can't use the truck bed for anything when we put the hook up thing in the bed. I know, dumb questions but you guys seem to be really tolerant with dumb a$$ people speaking about myself only. I that true, does it wreck your bed? Lots of room in them for just the two of us and we could live in it for a while till we found the place we are looking for to retire in a year.
Thanks again for all your help. You have been a lifesaver and nobody has yelled at me yet for dumb, dumb questions. I know I could go look at one but this is easier to get the ideas as to who wins me or my DH (bless his heart)

The thing in the bed is called a Fifth Wheel Hitch. And you can't put anything in the bed higher that the rails on the bed. And probably don't want much of anything behind the hitch. In between the hitch and fiver.

Depending on the brand and model of the hitch you can end up with a flat bed when the hitch is removed without a lot of fuss. They are heavy tho. The hitch will not ruin the truck bed.

We have lived fulltime in a 5th wheel since March '06, at various times we have carried firewood, ladder, our "maytag" (firetub) & metal holder, front end stabilizer & 2 5 gal cans fuel. We don't carry firewood anymore. There is room for "stuff" in the bed, it just has to sit lower than the bed height or the 5th wheel pin box might hit it when turning. There are no dumb questions, we all started sometime with little to no knowledge of what we were doing.

Today's fifth wheel hitches have rails that are permanently mounted in the bed. The actual hitch will set in these rails or slide into them. When the hitch is removed, you only have the rails in the bed, most rails only sit up an inch or less and does not interfere with the usability of the bed.

Not all hitches are that way, the B&W Companion gives you a flat bed when removed.

Even without using the bed of the truck for storage, you are going to have a great deal more storage space under a 5th wheel than any TT. We usually have a Carryout satelite dish, water softner, wheel chocks, blocks, a large cooler and sometimes a case of water and beer in our truck bed.

How do they hook up the hitch reciever? Do they have to take the truck bed off or does it bolt on? My DH's question. Ever heard of Dumb and Dummer

Usually bolts to the bed without removing anything. It doesn't hook up to your existing hitch receiver; it's a separate system entirely.
