I replaced my Onan RV 4000. I have no complaints. The old one gave me many thousands of usage hours.
The 50 hour break in oil change is due. I'm thinking about using 10-30 full synthetic oil.
Does anyone have a comment on this subject?
Thanks

The only comment that really matters is Onan's. What do they recommend?

Over the last couple of years several people have said/posted that they talked to Onan customer service and were told it was okay to use synthetic oil. I started using Mobil One 10W30 in my mine last year (along with my engine). No problems so far.

..I also have been using Mobil One full synthetic 10W30 and have noticed faster starts, quieter operation and am pleased with it so far...had asked at an Onan repair shop and was told it should be fine...also running full synthetic in my RV engine...a 6.6L Chev..

Use what the manufacturer recommends. Especially under warranty.

I like running full synthetic in generators if at all possible, just because newer ones are splash lubricated, so the little oil the genset uses is put through heavy use. Might as well use the best.

isn't it supposed to get SAE30 or 15W40? i would go with the 15W40 rotella (or mobil-1 after break-in).

My manual says SAE30 is good for the temp range I tend to stay in but says 10W30 is okay for wider temp ranges.
From the Onan manual:
TABLE 1. OIL VISCOSITY VS. TEMPERATURE
EXPECTED AMBIENT SAE VISCOSITY
TEMPERATURES GRADE
32° F (0° C) and higher .........30
10° F to 100° F (-12° C to 38° C) 15W-40
(OnaMax™)
0° F to 80° F (-18° C to 27° C) 10W-30
10W-40
-20° F to 50° F (-28° C to 10° C) 5W-30
