I was really stressing over this potential disaster and even posted earlier on this site looking for some peace of mind. Anyway the other day I was on YouTube and stumbled across the greatest thing ever! Go to lowclearances.com. For only $15 you can download over 3500 listed low clearances across the country. Lifetime membership is inlcuded. I installed the POI download to my Tom Tom. It apparently can work with other GPS systems also. You set the GPS then to alert you whenever a low clearance (bridge, overpass, etc.) is ahead on your route. You choose to set the restricted height warnings yourself. Going to try it out this weekend for the first time. It actually looks pretty cool. Check it out. So far I have a little better peace of mind.
I watch for the Low Clearance Warning Signs! When I see on, I find a way around it. Has worked since the last time I hit a low bridge way back in 1971.
Well everyone. I am here to say the software really worked. We were in St Augustine this weekend (uhhh-Tropical Storm?) got a mandatory evacuation from Anastasia State Park. If you have been in that area, you will know that in order to actually go West, you must go over some pretty good size bridges. I wasn't up for that because of the 50-70MPH Gusts that were predicted. So we snaked our way into Jacksonville (downtown with a 28' TT in tow) and started to head north. My wife was tryng to find a route to take us North and somewhat West, when this wierd Cuckoo Bird sound came from the GPS. It took about 5 seconds until it sank in....it was the alert I set for low clearances below 12 feet. It just so happens, it alerted us and gave us the distance and height of the low clearance....10'3". Whooooo! It paid for itself. We were desparately trying to get out of the area and just did not think of this issue until the alert went off. I can promise you that if it hadn't, with all the other things I was thinking about, I may have missed this one which would have been disasterous. I am happy I bought it.
