Hi! Hubby and I will be in the Columbus Ohio area for a wedding in late July. We will be coming North on Route 23 and notice A.W. Marion State Park on the map. If any of you have camped there, please let us know what you think. Also if there are any other places within no more than 30 to at max 50 miles South, east or West of Columbus. I've tried to find pictures of the state park but so far haven't had any luck. We usually like to stay in State Parks if we can. Thanks for any help and advice.
For government parks, I use this site almost exclusively. 1st... note the legend at the bottom of the map. Secondly, drag the Google map to the Columbus area and zoom in. The column on the right will list the campgrounds showing on the map. Click on a particular park and it will lead you to a website for more info. Most all government parks are listed.
I know you specified south, west and east but if you are not opposed to going 30 min. north of Columbus, either Alum Creek State Park or Delaware State Park will not disappoint. In my opinion, both are worth the extra miles, and both located near US23. Both campgrounds are very nice and situated on corps of engineers lakes.
Hocking Hills State Park to the south off of US 33 is also nice, but usually booked pretty solid in the summertime. It's also close to an hours drive from Columbus. I understand this campground can be noisy/rowdy at times but I've never experienced that myself.

I would try the Alum Creek campgrounds north of Columbus off Route 36 and I-71.
If you are coming north out of Portsmouth on US 23, there is Sciota Trails just south of Chillicothe. It is about an hour drive to Columbus.

Try Cross Creek across from Alum Creek State Park, it's a Good Sam Park. Nice grounds, pool full hook-up, but no cable. You aren't far from Columbus Zoo and their water park.
