First, here is an alert about traffic if you are entering the park via visalia. 198, the general's highway, is a traffic mess. we were up there this last weekend and they were doing road oiling, in two locations. flagmen and escorts for a mile or so, each way. but that wasnt the big problem. they are widening and putting retaining walls in a 2-3 mile stretch about two-thirds up. they have windows for 2 hour road shutdowns. if you hit one, you will wait for 2 hours before proceeding, with no way to turn around. if you miss one of these, the wait at a construction signal is just 20 minutes, but it is slow and dusty going. this construction should last for months, or even years. once you get through it is clear sailing and beautiful.
best bet is to go up from fresno on 180. you'll have access to grants grove, sherman grove and crystal cave without hitting construction.
by the way, we stayed in sequoia rv park in 3 rivers. fantastic place. clean, quiet and reasonable.
at least it is in a beautiful spot. we got caught for 1 hour 55 minutes a couple weeks ago .pulled out chairs enjoyed the view along with 3 deer. it looks like a major job that will be there for a long time
Be sure to call the visitor center at Lodgepole for project info -- they know when the closures will happen and so forth. Very helpful. We were there in January and they saved us a lot of time and trouble.

That's been going on for quite a while. We waited last year in about that same area. Your best bet is to take #180 up into the park. A few more miles for people coming from the south, but no road construction.
