I have a 30 amp connection. One of the campgrounds I'm looking at staying in is only 50 amp service. I thought I had read somewhere to only use 30amp. Just wondering if I can get an adapter or something and use the 50amp, or do I risk blowing something in my RV? Thanks.

Yes - you can get a "pigtail" or "dog Bone" connector to use this hookup.

All 50a pedistals that I've seen also have a 30a plug-in. You should be fine.

+1 This is how I've seen them all, though I've only been to 7 different camp grounds (just started mid last year)

But, to be safe, I also have a pigtail just in case that stays in the camper that takes a 30a and plugs into a 50a.

I also have a pigtail to plug into a normal 3 prong extension cord incase I just need a little juice and I'm not at a 30a place.

Take an adapter with you. Whether a 50 amp pedestal also has 30 amp and 20 amp outlets depends on how much money the owner had when he was setting up that particular site. I've seen plenty that are missing one outlet or another.

In specific reply to your question

Buy an adapter to allow your 30 Ampere cord
to plug into a 50 Ampere receptacle. These
are available at WalMart or any R V store.
Your input breaker IN the RV will limit
the current to 30 Amperes. Your 30 Ampere
cord will be over protected by a 50 Ampere
breaker, but this is not a problem.

Hi,

I carry a "break out" box that converts a 50 amp into one thirty amp (with 30 amp breaker) and two 20 amp outlets (each protected by their own 20 breaker).

Using an adapter does leave the pedestal unbalanced but that will not cause you any grief.

This is not always true. I have been to several RV Parks that only had a 50 amp connector. Had to use a dogbone to plug in my 30 amp RV.

Probably need nothing as most 50a sites have 50, 30 & 20a connectors.
