I have a 1984 Vogue motorcoach with a 454 on a P30 frame. My differential went out last summer and it has been sitting at the mechanic's shop since then. The mechanic says they cannot find parts for the rear end. Does anyone have any leads on where to get parts, particulary in the Southwest region?

If you can not find parts you can put in a use or a new one from Dana.

I would think any Chevy truck dealer should be able to help you out.

My P30 chassis guide says that pre 1990 on a 14500lb chassis uses a dana 79 10 1/2 ring gear.
Can't believe that any chevy dealer or NAPA place can't get parts.
The reckin yards also ought to be full of them.

Sounds like you need a different mechanic. Should be able to find replacement parts fairly easy and if not just slap a new one under there.

does your mechanic have one of those interlock systems on his own vehicle? Could be he doesnt want to mess with it since the springs probably needed to be rearched and various other sundry repairs needed with a coach that old.

My Dana started leaking gear oil around the hot pressed axle tube because I hit a speed bump at 60MPH. But not down the axle shaft, so the brake pads do stay dry.
While researching the problem, I found salvage Dana 80's at www.heavytruckparts.net in the $1400 range. I wasn't looking for Dana 70's but I believe they have some.
After seeing that price, all I did was to clean up the area real well, then ran Permatex High-Temp Red RTV Silicon around the tube to differential seal area. Two layers of silicon. Worked fine for almost a year, until last week when I went over a 4" deep rut at an angle (and too high a speed). It puked out a cup or so of gear oil, but the level was still detectable. Topped it off and got back on the road. So now I'm looking at putting another layer of silicone around it.
When you say your differential went out...what does that mean?

If you can't find parts measure the WMS on your axel and look for a D70 or D80 with the same wheel bolt pattern. Other thing to look for is to make sure the gear ratio is the same. If you lucky all the brackets will line up, if not a good welder can make it work. Not familiar with the D79 but the D70 and D80 are more popular. I buy my diff parts from Randy's R&P

When I was pulling out of a state park, I suddenly had no power and the sound of metal grinding on metal coming from the rear axle when I put it in gear.

Bummer. I don't know what your mechanic is doing...those pumpkins have tags on them listing the manufacturer and the model number of the differential. Shouldn't take nearly a year to get or find the right parts for it so they can quote the work.
Have you considered moving it to a different shop?
Is it in a Truck shop or at a RV repair place?
