Hi, We are planning a trip to the North West leaving in August. We want to see Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse & surrounding area when we pass through. We plan to stay in Custer. How crowded is it during Sturgis week? Will we be able to get around with out too much traffic if we stay away from Sturgis?

It will be crowded all around that area and the worst part is all prices will be inflated for that time period.

The Sturgis Rally is the first full week of Aug. (6 thru 12 this year), and one will have a problem finding a place to stay at the better CG's. Will it be crowded YES, there could be upwards of 500,000 motorcycles in the area during that week.

You need to realize that the area in an 80 mile radius of Stugis will be crowded the week before and the week after. Many go before and after to avoid the big crowds and price gougng

If you can swing it, you should try to arrive in the Black Hills sometime after the middle of August, the number of motorcycles just kind of overwhelms the solitude and enjoyment of the area during Sturgis Rally. And as other posters have noted, prices are high during that week of the rally, and maybe a few days before and after too.

I can only give a hearty "Second" to that idea. If you've never been around the Sturgis Rally, then you cannot even imagine how overcrowded that area becomes.
I would not even attempt to vacation in that area during the Rally. No way, shape or form, UNLESS I was there for the rally itself.
I worked the rally several times in law enforcement capacity. Imagine a traffic jam of motorcycles, tire to tire almost, stretching from Sturgis to Deadwood on US 14.
Stay out and stay away until the madness is over.

We visited the area a few weeks after the rally. almost all the bikes were gone. I would difinetly plan to be in the area well before or after the rally. The black hills are really something to see. You want to be able to see them stress free. Enjoy the trip.

Thanks for all the Info. I guess we'll have to try to get there before or after the Rally. Really messes up our trip plans, but I don't want to miss Mt. Rushmore etc.

We were there last year and had no problems with the rally attendees. A bunch of motor cycles, but kinda fun to see all of them lined up in the middle of main streets in towns miles away from Sturgis. You do get tired of the sound of a Harley, after a while. We stayed in Hill City, and there was room for more. I didn't see any increase in prices. I wouldn't change my plans to avoid the rally. but I'm flexible.
