I would look at getting a receiver hitch for you van and then get or make a small cargo box that fits into the receiver. That way you can saftly carry your 20LB tank. I bought one of those carriers for my van and built a box for it. You can then stick a small BBQ back there as well. If you already have a hitch, then you can likely get set up for $100 bucks.

the milk carton works .
i'm switching from propane stoves and lanters to white / liquid fuel ones . more btu's and less 1# tanks to throw out .
