I do like the idea of mounting it on the pin box but the 90 gallon aux tank may be a clearance problem.

The camper is at a storage yard 6 miles away so I am going to have to drive over tomorrow to take some measurements, but right now the pin box mounted gen seems like the best location.

My last truck had a diesel tank in the bed and I had no problem carrying the gen on the pin box.

When I unhitch i just pull forward about 3 feet and can then lower the landing gear of the 5er if needed. That brings the gen down close to the truck bed for loading/unloading. You could just leave it up there too.

I put a front receiver hitch on my truck and carry the generator there. I also can carry it at the back of the 5er if I want, but prefer the front of my truck. Honda 3000 weighs about 150lbs.

Good comments. I have a 7000kw Honeywell/Honda generator with the electric start I'll be putting in the bed of the truck I guess. Not sure I really want a front hitch on it, and too heavy for the back of the 5'er or the pin box. It works great running the house here in the winter when the power goes out, just couldn't justify buying two Honda's or similiar when I have this thing sitting at the house on wheels ready to go.

I was planning on making a little house for it in the back of the truck to keep it out of the weather and out of sight. It sticks up just a bit above the bed rails so I can't just put my folding bed cover over it. Plus it will help to keep the noise down.

Anyone done the cover for one out of wood?

A slip on cover made of boat cover canvas would be the easiest solution for a cover the genny. I have a similar cover for the self generating welding machine that is mounted in the back of my truck. Just be sure to bungee it down good or it may fly off on the highway.

Thanks for the replies, I expected to be on the road and arrive in NY a month ago but plans never seem to be working out for me lately. I had my cousin fly from OR to CT to bring his mother (my mothers sister) to visit so that messed up the time line, then a tooth problem delayed me even more when an antibiotic the dentist gave me messed up my stomach, the final straw was my back gave out and put me in bed for a few days..

I am going to be living in NY for 4 to 8 weeks maybe more while I straighten out things in NY and sell my mothers house so I am glad I did manage to get the Direct TV dish installed on the roof. I also noticed the bottom of the 5th scraped the truck bed rails and cause some damage (I'll post pictures) because the B&W hitched was installed too low. I moved it up and back a few inches and tomorrow 7/1/12 I am going to see if there is enough room to put the gen in the bed (I my remove the wheels on the gen to gain an inch), or a second option is the compartment in the front of the 5th, My third option will be to call my neighbors friend over to weld a mount on the pin box.

I honestly had hoped to be home by the 4th of July but it looks like I won't be leaving till the 5th.

I will post pictures but probably not until I am on the road

I once read that studies have shown that most accidents occurr within 10 miles of home, so I moved

The less pain and suffering for me was to use the two 2KW Hondas in the bed of the truck. They served other purposes just great as one person can easily move them around. using the FOLD-A-COVER panels for the truck bed cover the generators were completely out of site and did not hamper any of the fifth wheel hookup. My 2KW Honda never leaves my truck bed. When it was time to use them I just pulled them out onto the truck tail gate while they were still secured to the inside of the truck bed using steel lock cables.

plenty of room under the FOLD-A-COVER for the fifth wheel hitch and generators can sit up behind the rear window or where I keep mine in the tailgate corner. Does not interfere with the fifth wheel hitch at all on my F150 truck. I actually have a full width tool box under the fold-up area behind the rear window. Everything locks up and it out site when parked.

I also originally installed a DirecTV dish setup on the roof of my fifth wheel. Big mistake as 99 percent of the time you will park your fifth wheel under a shade tree at the camp sites. I soon realized this and all but abandoned the roof mount dish for a portable tri-pod dish with two 150-foot long RG cables on it (One for each SAT head port). Now I can move the tri-pod all around the camp site to find the SE skies and air conditioner on fifth wheel works alot better sitting under the shade trees.

All thieves carry dremal tools now and can cut thru a pad lock in less then 15 seconds... And they will use your own 120VAC power to do it haha... The best method I have found to keep legs from growing on things is to keep everything out-of-site as best you can. We also are forever running into where we can run our generators and for the most part here on the East side of the US is 8AM-10AM in the morning and then again from 4:30PM-7:30PM in the early evenings. Not much time to run air conditioners to cool things down.

You gotta do what you gotta do and all we can do on this end is pass along our experiences...

Good luck on your mission haha...

Welding a 2" hitch tube to the bottom of the generator frame would give you lots of possibilities. Then you have the choice of carrying the generator in any location that you have a 2" hitch receiver. That includes front or rear hitch of truck, pinbox mounted hitch, or hitch on rear of trailer, or hitch on any other vehicle you have.

That's a very flexible range of choices, all from one modification to the generator. Build the hitch tube mount on the generator as universal as you can, so you have no problems carrying the generator in any or all of those locations.

I have had a crazy summer, I left SC early July and was living in my camper parked in my mother's driveway till early Sept. I drove a rental moving truck back to SC the spent a couple weeks in SC before driving back to NY I ordered a front mounted receiver hitch mounted on the front of my truck. I am now in a NC campground about 180 miles from home. hopefully the receiver should be waiting for me when I get home.

I found the seller on line a spoke with them about buying something to fit my truck. it turned out the internet company's office was about 7 miles from my house so I can just drive over an pick it up when I get home

If I remember correctly the setup is rated @ 400 pounds, my generator is under 200 pounds.

I put my Onan right inside my tool box with the exhaust going down to the frame and out to wheel well. And when we lose power at the house it's right next to our 30 amp house plug and we feed the heater or A/C and TV and some lights. Works well .
